developed exzema?

So I never had Exzema before but now Im getting it. Started on my left elbow, now I have it on my right. It is so itchy & annoying. Since my OB couldnt dx it I figured out what it was on my own. A friend of mine had the same issue. Is there anything I can use that is safe? Hydrocortisone is not working...

Re: developed exzema?

  • There are a lot of skin conditions similar to eczema that come up in pregnancy. I have had it a long time and it was only easy for them to diagnose because it is often seen with asthma. Go see your primary care doctor because hydrocortisone usually does not work.

  • I had eczema before i got pregnant and one of the main things the dermatologist asked me was if i was pregnant and told me that if i became pregnant i needed to immediately stop using the cream she gave me- apparently the stronger creams are dangerous for baby- luckily my eczema went away on its own when the weather warmed up- my daughter has TERRIBLE eczema though and we don't like to use the steroid creams on her (pediatrician said we should only use them when it is a REALLY bad outbreak and not all the time) so we have bought her the Aveeno Oatmeal bath packets and they honestly work better than the steroid cream, all you do is dump the little packet in the bath and soak for 15-20 minutes, afterwards we usually load her up with the aveeno eczema therapy lotion and it works WONDERS, i would give it a shot if i were you, my husband has bad eczema and this works for him as well- you can buy the oatmeal bath and the lotion at CVS or any other similar drug store

  • I have had severe eczema my whole life.  As a previous poster said, a lot of the standard treatments (steroids) are not safe during pregnancy and breastfeeding.  But, the odds are that it will go away eventually if you didn't have it pre-pregnancy.

You can use a lot of self-soothing techniques (lots of high quality, no fragrance or dye moisturizer will help--LOTS--I like Eucerin), avoid chemicals on any rashy area, and try to avoid chlorine and hot water.

I also, almost accidentally, found something that really helps me when I have a big flare.  I was prescribed Jack Newman's ointment for what I thought was a yeast infection on my breast but turned out actually to be a new eczema flare.  It actually helped and when I had a really bad flare on my hand I tried a little there and it worked too.  Apparently part of the recipe is a very low dose steroid that is safe for pregnancy and breastfeeding.  I've only used it once or twice very sparingly but it was nice to find something pregnancy approved.  So you might talk to your OB/Midwife and see if there is something very low-dose that they are comfortable with.  I wouldn't use anything until talking to my provider, though.
