3rd Trimester

How soon is too soon to wash baby clothes?

We have not washed and put her bedding in because we figure it'll just get dusty in the next 11 weeks.  However, my sister has given us TONS of baby clothes. An absolutely insane amount (does one really need 55 sleepers alone in 0-3 and 3-6 months?)  But anyway, I've had these boxes here for months, and she sent me the 6-9 boxes this weekend.  I'm itching to get the newborn, 0-3, and 3-6 washed, sorted, and put in baby's new dresser that came Friday, but wondered if I am jumping the gun.  WWYD?

PS. Again, this is all hand me downs, nothing with tags to be removed.  Thanks!

  • I don't see anything wrong with washing them now and putting them away. I have not washed everything yet, but that is because they all have tags and I want to be able to return things if our LO is bigger than expected. I only washed onesies and sleepers for now. But if I had clothes that would not be returned either way, then I would wash them now. Especially if you have already gotten the next  bunch :)

since it sounds like you have a lot to wash, I'd go ahead and get started. I think with DS I started about 2 months early?

  • I had ours washed a few weeks ago.  they are going in your dresser anyway and shouldn't get dirty while you wait.  I also did sheets, etc and put them in a linen closet.

  • I just washed everything today, only because I had time.  We don't have a dresser yet so I'm piling everything up by size in her crib (I already put a mattress cover on the mattress basically in anticipation of piling clothes there).  I'm not too worried about them getting dusty before I get a new dresser for DS and move his into baby's room.

  • I've got everything for baby washed and put away. I put the washed bedding back into the plastic bag that it came in, so it won't get dirty or dusty. I don't even have a mattress for the crib yet.

I don't think it's too early for you to get a start on your washing.  Have fun!

  • I've been washing things as I get them and just putting them away. We have had a ton of clothes given to us also, and I went ahead and washed all of it and put the bigger sizes in storage bins so when she is able to wear them I know they have been cleaned.

  • I was them once I have a laundry load worth. I've been doing for the last 2 months or so. I'm not worried about the bedding getting dusty and we have his dresser set up so why not fill it.

  • I washed everything at about 30 weeks and put everything in her drawers. I knew I would not feel like washing clothes at this time and in this heat!

Go for it! The more you get done now the less you'll have to do when you're huge and tired :)

I agree!  I've been thinking the same thing, but as soon as hubby gets the crib put together, I'm going to start washing!

  • As PP have all said, I see nothing wrong with getting it done and put away! I did all of LO's linens, NB and 0-3 months clothes last week. It took me an entire afternoon and I was SO relieved once it was done. It really tired me out and I figured it would be easier to get it done now than when I am HUGE!

  • I started washing everything a little after 36 weeks..that was probably too early as well but I was wanting to do it so I did :)

  • I washed everything that was used when I got it, starting around 28 weeks (was too paranoid to accept anything before then). I'm just now washing about half of my 0-3M clothing stash that was new and crib sheets that were new. I washed her crib sheet around week 30 and just threw a blanket on top of it so that no dust would collect on the sheet.
  • I got a bunch of hand me downs from my SIL when I was about 24w.  I washed them all and organized them away in LO's dresser.  But I am known among my friends/family to be a crazy pre-planner.....I pretty much had the nursery done at 22w :)

And as for new clothes I am going to wait until after the shower to make sure I don't have duplicates and then I will start washing those also.

This is exactly what I did when ds #1 was born.  Then, when he outgrew clothes, I washed them and stored them.  This time around, I have only had to wash a handful of things since all of the old clothes were already washed.  I organized and put everything away a few weeks ago.

  • I washed everything about a week ago, but had everything sorted and stored away in her dresser prior to that.  Also, I only washed her 0-3 and 3-6 clothes everything else is in her dresser w/tags.  I think I'll wash them when the time comes.

I'm due in 2 days and her bedding is just now getting washed...but only cuz DH is doing the laundry :)

  • I started at 36 weeks. I think now is a great time for you to start.

  • I am 34w and just washed all the baby's clothes, bed and bath linens this weekend.  We are moving in 3 weeks so I packed everything up into Ziploc bags.  I think you can wash everything as early as you feel like it.  Getting it done early while you still have energy is also a plus...one less thing to worry about down the road.
