How much noise did you make?

I was reading emlynnlerette's birth story and got to wondering how much noise everyone else made. I know I wasn't quiet and my DH said later that the door to the room was open the whole time. Who knows who I scared! But I don't care - it helped me focus on getting through the pain. I don't remember making much noise during pushing though. So, how noisy where you while in labor?

Re: How much noise did you make?

  • I watched my birth video and was shocked to realize that I was VERY loud. I didn't realize it. I had a med free home birth, and was very vocal through contractions. Even when I was 9 cm dilated and exhausted, I was moaning very deeply. Pushing is a whole other story. I only pushed for 10 minutes, but I screamed bloody murder the whole time. Even when I stopped physically pushing to catch my breath, my body would continue without me. I was shocked my neighbors didn't hear me, but I later found out that my sister shut the windows when I started to really scream.

haha i would have loved to hear what i sounded like!!!! after 25hrs of labor and 2hrs worth of pushing i know i was loud! there was also a poor nursing student in there i probably scared her for life haha :)
  • I walked for a couple hours at the hospital and I know I made some moaning sounds with the back labor but it was 5 am so there was no one around. After the epidural and during pushing I was pretty quiet except when her head was coming out. The ring of fire was very real for me and I let out a scream as she crowned.

  • I had a super fast, pre-term birth... so fast that there was no time for the epidural I planned on, and I didn't get any other pain killers either.  Needless to say, I was in shock that I was even in labor and completely terrified.  I breathed pretty well through the contractions, but once it was time to push, I screamed bloody murder.  I think I yelled "I'm going to black out" about a hundred times, and who knows what else I said between screams.  Yeeeah, my throat was raw for the next 2 days from screaming.... Embarrassed

I made a fair bit of moaning noises and weird noises when I was trying to breath properly.  I'm sure at one point there was someone in the birth suite next to me and I know that you can hear EVERYTHING if you are in the bathroom (which is shared between the 2 rooms) because while I was in labour there was someone in the bathroom giving birth on the floor (DF and I heard every single thing that went on) and I must say I'm very envious of the fact that she had a 4 hour labour and very short pushing time.

  • DH said he couldn't believe how quiet I was, He was expecting movie type screams. The most noise I made was when I told DH and the nurse it was time to push, but I credit that completely to the amazing epidural I got : ) 9 hours of painful contractions that were 3 minutes apart were enough for me!

  • I was very quiet throughout my labors, I think the most I said was "this is quite uncomfortable" but I am a quiet person by nature. My DH does a great job of keeping me calm and focusing through the contractions.

  • Oh Man! I was extremely vocal. Here were some of my finer moments..

Me to nurse: Why are you walking away?! Everytime you walk away I have to push! You are supposed to be holding my leg!"  (In my defense - she was a really bad nurse)

ME: She's not coming! She's not coming out! I know it! She's staying in there forever!"

MY OB: No Jenn, she's right here. I can see her head.

ME: "No you can't! You are lying to me! Why are you lying to me?"

MY OB: Jenn, I promise, her head is right here. Do you want to feel it?

    ME: "NOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!"

DH: "I think we should have 5 more."

ME: Shut the f*** up! Shut up! What is wrong with you? I hate you and i'm never doing this again!"

    DH: "Ok."

ME: Oh my God! What the hell just happened? Is that normal? Oh my God! What is going on down there?!" (as blood squirted across my body and all over the nurse I hated - it was really really gross)

ME to the Med Student: "I really hope you are learning something down there!"

    After baby was out...

"SHE"S OUT OF ME! SHE"S OUT OF ME! I DID IT! OH MY GOD!"

:insert extreme sobbing with a pillow over my face:

    "Did I poop? Please tell me I didn't poop!" (I didn't poop btw) ;o)

"My baby!!! My little brown haired baby! Hi my little monkey!" (I really wanted a brown haired baby - I was sooo happy when I got to see her)

"Please just leave my vagina alone! Why wont you just leave it alone?" (as they were stitching me up)

  • Before I got my epi. I said a few cuss words during contractions but that was it. After that I didn't make any noises at all. I was really focused while I pushed and got him out in 45 minutes.

  • Shockingly, I only said "Ow" really quietly but it sounded more like "meow," panted like I was going to cry and held my breath more than anything lol, while I labored on the way to the hospital/an hour while I waited for it.  Then I didn't make any noise post epidural.  But I set a land speed record for first time l&d (from start of active labor to finish it was 4 hrs 50 minutes exactly).  Lucky me! :D

  • Lots!  I totally didn't think I'd like vocalizing during labor, but I did!  I didn't have pain meds, and moaning was my epidural.  It really did make me feel better.
  • I had a few ow moments before the epidural but pushing was very quiet. DH says I make more noise pooping. Lol!!!

  • I made a lot of noise and the further along I got, the more I swore (my MIL hid in the bathroom towards the end).  Good thing I went quick (from breaking of my water to her appearance just over 5 hours)!

  • I whined and cried a bit during contractions up until I got my epi....after that I felt absolutely nothing so I was nice and quiet and carried on a conversation thru out pushing. Without the epi it would have been an entirely different story :)

This was me too. I cried during contractions before the epi and remember saying "I can't do this" but once I got the epi I slept until it was time to push and when the nurse said it was time I told DH I wasn't pushing her out until I could get my contacts on because I wanted to be able to see her. I had a conversation during pushing and was texting family between pushes but she was literally born within just a few pushes. I held my own legs and the epi was completely awesome.

  • I was SCREAMING. When I got to the hospital I was completely dilated and effaced, so I was going through transition (a surprise to everyone, especially me!). I didn't notice my contractions until right before they got bad. Like, really bad. I went from feeling a little something at 3am to giving birth at 6:30am. I was totally the crazed hollering woman you see in the movies. And I didn't care at all--that was painful!!! I don't remember too much noise during pushing, they were really adamant that I hold my breath and bear down.

  • Oh, I was also hoarse the rest of the day--another sign that I was pretty loud!

  • i thought i was reasonable good - the MW keep saying use the energy to puch not grunt..... and i thought i was but the next day my husband said i swore like a trooper (i never swear) so maybe i wasn't as quiet as i thought!!!!

    LOL! That's awesome!

These are great ladies, thanks for sharing. I did leave out that all my loudness was before the epi. After it I was out like a light until it was time to push and while I was pushing all I said was, "She's still up in my ribs, her feet are in my ribs." I was having a hard time bringing my knees to my chest. It felt like she was stretched out straight as can be making it impossible for me to bend at all and I was worried she'd never move.

  • DH says while I was in labor (epidural fail) I was talking only to him and it was "loud talking", nothing too loud. While I pushed I was "quiet as a mouse"! haha I had to ask him since I didn't really remember either

  • Oh gosh - I was doing so well through my contractions by closing my eyes and silently working through them.  I was nicely listening to my IPod.

Then LO's heartrate dropped...  I lost it hearing her heartrate drop like that and all the nurses and docs that came pouring in.  Once they put the oxygen mask on me all silence and focus went out the window.

I was screaming but was muffled by the mask.

Once they took it off - instead of actually screaming, I just blew through the contractions really really hard.

Anthony Javier will be here soon!

  • I was really quiet. I think I cried during a couple pre-epidural contractions but nothing loud. However, the woman in the room down the hall was screaming bloody murder. My H was horrified -- he was like "What is happening to her?" Um, the same thing that's about to happen to me.

  • Dry Birth-- I was screaming like a B-horror movie until the epidural-- DH said they actually asked me to keep it down, I was scaring other patients- I didn't hear a thing.

  • The hour before I got my epi I was crying and swearing, but not too loudly.  After the epi, I was pain-free until he was crowning.  While I was pushing I was pretty quiet because I kept holding my breath, but at one point they told me to stop pushing and I made loud guttural sounds.  I also made those sounds when he actually came out.  I remember hearing myself and thinking it didn't sound like me. lol
  • Completely unmedicated birth. I was loud. As he was crowning, I yelled "please please please please!!!" really loud. I remember yelling that because I wanted my OB to just pull him out. DH told me just this week that he thought I was dying and he got very scared.
  • I was almost silent during labor.  Completely med free.  I shocked myself, hubs, and friends who were all there.  I did talk and joke between contractions, and during pushing I told the dr. to get her out a whole bunch.  I was not silent with my other kids at all Wink

  • at the begining of my labour I had no problem I would just moan a little and say ow, as the contractions got stronger and closer together I got louder. By the time I was pushing the nurses said now I don't want to hear screaming so focus all the scream into the push lol think I started to give them a headach but it worked I shut up until the last few pushes where I just had to let out some noise

  • I had a med-free birth, and I made some noise! :)  I was quiet in early labor at home, but once I got to the hospital, my water broke as soon as I got to my room, and things progressed really quickly (2.5 hours from water breaking to baby arriving!).  I lost all my AF in three huge gushes, and after that the contractions were incredibly painful.  During transition, I would moan, "Another one is coming!" as each contraction started and said, "I can't do this! Help me!" with each one.  I definitely screamed during pushing too.

  • I was good until I got into transition- around 7cm.  I started begging my husband to make the pain stop.  Once it was time to push (no epi) I was a bit loud- DH says I swore 2-3 times but I only remember doing it once.  I also decided that my pushing wasn't working effectively and told my MW there was no point in continuing since she was never coming out.  I then begged her to reach in and grab my baby.  And when I made that final push to get LO out I screamed- at the top of my lungs.  DH says that wasn't my only scream but it's the only one I remember (I had nubain in my IV which made me fall asleep between contractions and made some of the details very fuzzy).  So yeah- I'm not proud of it but I did get loud.

  • l was also fine until transition- I made some low moaning noises that helped me deal with contractions, but that's it.

Once transition hit, I screamed bloody murder. I yelled things like, "I hate this!" and "Help me!" (I feel the worst about this one- I'm sure I scared some of the other poor women in L&D). Apparently once I started pushing, I turned to my doula and said, "That felt GOOD!" She thought that was hilarious. While I pushed, I made loud, low grunting noises, which I think helped me push effectively.

    In short, I was loud!

  • Hardly any! I haven't posted my birth story yet because I'm always posting from my phone, but I had a fantastic labor experience. I got my epi not even a full hour before DS was born so I didn't feel a thing. In fact I had to rely on the nurses to let me know if I was pushing. I only knew he was out because I saw something spit out at my doctor before I heard his first cry.
  • I know I didn't make any noise while I pushing, but to be fair I only pushed for 10 minutes! Before my epidural I did a little moaning and saying "ow" during my contractions but I never yelled or anything. I did tell DH to shut up once or twice but in a surprisingly calm voice Smile

  • I am really quiet when I'm writhing in pain so no noise at all before I got the epidural. At the recovery ward though that night when the night shift nurse had to put in an indwelling catheter in me because I couldn't pee on my own, I was whimpering because she gave me no pain meds prior and I could have sworn it felt like she was trying to reopen my sutures. I cried to myself after the catheter was in place. Otherwise, I don't think I scared anyone in the hospital except myself. I don't know that I'll put myself through all that again.
