Alexis Rose is here!

Time for an update.

On Thursday I was feeling sick so I called the dr and went in immediately. He was concerned with my blood pressure. When I went in it was high and I had a protein in my urine. I was there at 12 and the doctor called the hospital and I was told to go to Bethesda at 3. Came home, showered and got some food and headed in. A couple came in right after we checked in and she was in active labor so they took our room which was fine. We waited for about an hour and a half after checking in to get into our room. I was given cytotec. It caused some very small contractions that I could only see on the moniter.

6 hours later I was 3 cm 60% effaced. I was given another dose and a sleeping pill. 6 hours later there was very little change and the doctor decided to go with pitocin rather than the 3rd dose of the cytotec. Started the pitocin around 5:30 and had my first strong contraction around 7am. Around 10:30 they went to check me and my water broke at the same time. I was 5 cm. I decided to get the epidural. That was an interesting experience. the lady administering the epidural hit my bone three times before she was able to get it positioned properly. By the time that was done I was crying and shaking. Thank goodness it took affect quickly.

I was able to get some sleep after the epidural and then soon we were ready to push. The epi was wearing off and I gave it a push for another dose. However that push didn't help at all. As a matter of fact shortly after that I started f eeling insanly itchy. Think covered in bugs bites. Every inch of me was itching like crazy and worst off the epii had worn off and now I was pushing, itching and unable to rest in between. The baby was stuck. Her head was coming down sideways rather than straight through the birth canal. The doctor made the decision to make the cut which i felt every bit of. I think he finally realized that the epi had worn off when I yelped like a kicked puppy. Finally almost 2 hours of pushing later, she was born.

I'm super sore. Totally hormonal and having a ton of issues breastfeeding. She latchs but falls asleep immediately. The LC at the hospital was able to get her to have one good feeding but it took all 3 of us (LC, me and H) to keep her stimulated and wake enough to eat for 10 minutes one breast. I havent gotten her to have a decent feeding since. Because of this we've been supplimenting and I've been pumping and giving her what I get. I'm at a loss. She has to eat but I feel like a failure and I am so frustrated that I want to give up. Everyone I've talked to for help is telling me to stop giving her formula and to make her eat from the breast. I can't do that. And I don't think the LC would advise me to do something that wasn't in her best interest. Now I've been able to get some milk coming in and I'm going to try her at the breast for the next feeding and if not just give her what I've pumped. I'm hoping 15 ccs of BM is enough for one feeding. Oh yes. She was tounge tied but that was cut at the hospital. She also has a very high palette.  Any thoughts?

If you've made it this far, you are rewarded with pictures.

  • CONGRATS!!! She is beautiful!!

I'm no help on breastfeeding as I was not allowed to breastfeed since Nolan was in the NICU. I exclusively pump but let him soothe at the breast. Keep on pumping away & give her what you can!! Some breast milk is better than none- I know how frustrating/disappointing/feeling of failure as a mother it is but don't give up!! Big hugs!!

  • Keep calling the warmlime at the hospital. I found some of the LC's more helpful than others. go in for appointments too. Maggie also had a high palate so getting a good latch was key.

  • Congratulations she is beautiful!!  Don't worry too much about how much she is getting right now because her belly is still very tiny and small amounts often is all she needs.  Just keep latching her and she will get the hang of it.  Good Luck and Congratulations again she is absolutely adorable!!

  • Congrats!  I love the pic of her with the sunglasses.  Don't give up on breastfeeding yet!  It can be very difficult and it takes time and practice but I hope you are able to make it work.

  • Congratulations!  She's adorable!

B was very lazy at the breast early on, and he fell asleep all the time.  He lost quite a bit of weight and that, combined with my postpartum hormones, made it a very tough experience starting out.  I pumped too, but before my milk came in, I couldn't keep up.  The LC had me supplement with formula, and I felt like it was the end of the world, since I was so set on BFing.  We used a syringe, because I was really worried about nipple confusion (and some people will say that this isn't something to worry about, but I wasn't taking chances).

I worked with the LC consistently (like two or three times a week), until B started gaining weight and we really had it.  The LC and I actually cried together when he got back to his birth weight, because it was a struggle at first.  I'd recommend working with an LC you like, and doing everything you can to keep her awake (get her naked, tickle her feet, etc).  Newborns are so sleepy, but that part does get easier.

Hang in there!  If this is what you want, you can make it happen.  Just don't beat yourself up about the things you CAN'T control right now.

    Congrats!!!

Ditto finding an LC you connect with.  If you're really serious about nursing, a good LC will help you find a way to make it work.  I wish I would have taken the time to do this.. .instead I just opted to pump for 11+ mos.  I don't wish that path on anyone.

  • Congratulations!!  You could also look into a La Leche League meeting or speak to a LLL leader for some assistance with breastfeeding.  I am glad you are both home and healthy!!

  • Congratulations!!! She is beautiful! Did they ever find out why you were itching so bad?
  • Congrats! She's adorable!!

Hang in there with the BFing. It will get easier! I agree with all the pp's, talk with a LC that you relate too. They can be so helpful! Also kellymom.com is a great bf resource.

  • Congrats!  She is beautiful.  I'm sorry the L&D was a little rough as well as the recovery.  The first two weeks are always the hardest I think.  Try to stick with it, but don't beat yourself up if it doesn't work out with nursing.
