  We went to an outside party two weeks ago at 4.  It was pretty hot for the adults but the kids didn't notice.

  I agree with 10am.   Summer in Houston is just way too hot for outdoor parties.  The kids won't notice the heat because of the water but the adults will.  Morning is really going to be the coolest part of the day, unless you are doing a really late evening party.
  

  We went to one a few weeks ago that was at 4pm and she had a pretty nicely shaded back yard but it was still pretty hot for the adults.  The kids played in the water, so they didn't notice.   August is usually hotter than June, so it will probably be pretty bad heat wise.

  I say 4-5..it is light until after 8 easily so that still gives plenty of time!!!

  The adults will always notice more than the kids no matter the time, but hey that is just part of being a parent.

  The only problem w/ morning is that you risk more thunderstorms as the heat of the day develops, also dusk makes for a more natural ending time to a party than endless hours of daylight, you know some people would let their kids play all day!!

  Thanks everyone.  We went with 4pm, there will be lots of shade in the yard around that time, even though it will be really hot. A lot of kids have morning activities,so we did not do 10 am. 

  I even tried bribing DS to see if would have it at pump it up (lol), nope, he really wants a polar express party at home, ugh.

  Indoor Party: What we do... 

  We do our Jan. birthday at home inside, because the weather is too variable to plan for outdoors.

  We rent children's tables and chairs, hire a clown, blow up a lot of balloons without helium, blow up a lot of balloons with helium, put out snacks for the adults (and beer), put on a pot of coffee, put out snacks for the kids, and then push go.

  It works out well. I put away many of our downstairs toys and try to leave only enough to entertain.

  The kids run around in organized mayhem, the clown really knows how to capture their attention with face painting and magic tricks. It really isn't hard if you can put things away, push back the furniture, and just let things happen. It is not for everyone; however, it works well for us every year.

  Outdoors

  Our October birthday is our outdoor party. We rent a pavilion at Hermann park. I prefer to do this at the earliest slot for a few reasons: 1) cooler temps (even early Oct. pushes my tolerance for outdoors), 2) no other party competes for first setup, 3) if weather becomes a problem, we can round up the troops and come back to the house and do what we do above.

  Hermann park has a great splash pad outside the big pavilion. The kids had a blast last year

   

  That's all I have on indoor and outdoor parties.

  Maybe you could invite the parents to wear swimsuits as well, I know some of them probably won't, but at least they know it's an option.....  That way they can get in on the waterslide fun with the kids, and they won't be so hot in our TX summer heat!
