What do you do if you love a name(s) but now they are too popular?

I have some names I really love, but they are so popular now and I hate that.
What are you doing if you like a name even though you hear it everywhere now?

  • Were still using it.. the way were spelling our name is the "proper" way the misspelled way is more popular being number 9 on last years ssn list.. but the proper was way lower.. even the misspelled is dropping.. I hate popular names as well but it happened.. thanks Sex and the city!

  • I would pick a different name.  But it was really important to me to have an uncommon name.

  • I say screw it and go with the name you love. My mom had my name (Amy) picked out when she was nine and it was hyper popular when I was young - I thought my first name was "Amy M." through all of kindergarten because I had to put that on everything. But she loves it and I never minded it.
After 2 losses, IVF #2 brought us our little boys.

  • We're using a name that's extremely popular, but it was a name we just loved and felt was perfect. Its popularity bothers me more than DH though, so I'm letting it slide. I am worried about her being the bazillionth girl in her classes with the same name.

  • One of my names is in the top 50, but it's not stopping me from using it.  It's common but I don't think it's too overused.  It doesn't bother me.

We actually just recently decided not to use the popular name we both love, Madeline.  We're going with something not quite as popular but I love just as much, Lorelei.

If it will bother you, then I would try to find something else, but if it doesn't bother you go with it!

That's getting popular too.. two of my friends have daughter named lorelei within the last three years :) not that I hear it all over.. one lives in alaska and one in canada.. its no ashley or michael but still getting common. Very pretty name btw.. wish I could make dh budge but he wont.. if I offer anything else he pouts and says he relinquishes any authority on.the naming..
  • We went into pregnancy with a few names we have both loved for awhile (yeah we were those weirdos who talked about baby names while dating). The names were: Lucy, Penny, Adelheid, and Esme. Lucy and Penny we decided to "save" (for a weird reason- we think due to my fam history we'll have twins and we want to save those for twins... won't be disappointed if we don't use the set). Then it was down to Adelheid or Esme and she "felt" more Esme to me, but I think what swayed me more was all the "Ad-" names around that would get "Addy" nicknames... and that was what we would've called her...

Long story short: we were swayed by the popularity.

  • Personally, I wouldn't use a very popular name. I have a really popular name and I HATE it. But if you love it, than go with it. A lot of popular names are popular for a reason, because they're good names. Emma is one of my favorites for a girl but it's REALLY popular, especially around here so I'd never use it, but it's a beautiful name you know? Go with what feels right.

  • I thought the name we chose wasn't popular, but since choosing it I have heard it at least 5 times. We both love it, so we aren't changing our minds.
  • The name we chose is pretty popular now, but we are using it anyway.  I feel it is better to use a name you love than pick one that you feel okay about just because it is unusual.

  • I'm so glad you posted this - we are in this dilemma at the moment!  We have about a dozen girls name that we like and only we one that we love love love. we both really like Charlie for a girl, but would name her Charlotte (b/c we like it too and so that she could revert back to it when she gets older if she doesn't like Charlie).  Our problem is that I think it's been number 1 for like the past three years or something.  We originally nixed it because of the popularity, but now that it's getting closer and we still haven't found an alternative that we love, we're thinking we're going to go with it.  I don't have many friends/relatives with young kids so I don't know how popular it actually is near us, but I think we're just going to use it anyways.  (Plus, every time we ask baby-in-the-belly what she wants to be called, Charlie consistently elicits the strongest kicks!)

  • That happened with the first boy's name we had picked out before I got pregnant. We changed because I wanted something that wasn't super popular, but our son's name will probably be really popular next year because we changed it!

I do have a girl's name picked out that I've loved forever and it's creeping up in popularity. If we have a daughter I will name her that no matter what!

This exactly as we are naming our babies the same name. But, for me it isn't the popularity that bothers me so much as the fact that other people misspell the name. I don't really care if a name is popular. The personality is what distinguishes a person. I just feel bad that LO will have to spell his name, because people think Aidan should be spelled another way- when this way is the traditional spelling. I don't like alternative spellings, especially for foreign names. But, like Azrayla said the name is declining in popularity so maybe it will be less of an issue for our LOs.

I think really loving the name is more important than having an uncommon name. Because, you are going to have to say this name forever...and most kids will go through life finding someone with the same name at some point. Plus, a lot of the names I see listed- that people say are uncommon- really are actually becoming more common...so there is really no way to avoid it. But, again, I don't think a name is what makes someone unique- so that affects my decision. Also, LO will have an extremely uncommon last name (as opposed to my very common last name) so how many uncommon names does he need?

  • Our girl name is not popular (there are a few, but not many and not really spelled the way we are spelling it) and we don't know any. Our boy name is quite popular, it was in the top 5 of the american SSN list, but not in the top 5 of the canadian(we are canadian) and we don't know anyone or anyone who knows anyone personally with a kid (or adult) with the name, so we don't care) PLUS... DF is positive it's a girl... so we will see.
