3rd Trimester

tmi...inducing natural labor

I'm almost 39 weeks 1cm dilated and 50% effaced and my Dr. stripped my membranes on friday (ouch, btw).  I had some BH later that evening but that was it.  Friday night I had cramps throughout the night and Saturday I had diarrhea (ugh..tmi, i know) throughout the day and loosing my mucus plug little by little.  Later that night I ate some spicy food, ate half of a pineapple and went for a pretty good walk. Today (Sunday) I woke up with a few contractions and already had diarrhea along with loosing some more mucus...what else can I do to go into labor?  I have heard sex is always they best however in I have vaginitis so it's not super comfortable...any suggestions?

  • if you cant have sex i guess the next best thing would be to go on another walk and just try to be up and moving around. good luck!

  • Curious - why are you trying to induce labor if you're not even 40 weeks yet?

  • I hear nipple stimulation works well (if you have a pump, manual takes forever I hear). Sitting on a birthing ball, too I think. GL Mama!!

  • I had some mix up with my due dates, and LO growth measurements have been off so my Dr. recommended trying to induce labor at home.  She was hoping it would happen this weekend.  No dice tho...

Well! She's pretty darn close that's for sure! I'd be trying to induce too! Not much else you can do. That baby is gonna come when baby is ready. But go on another walk, have an orgasm, maybe a shot of tequila (KIDDING!).

Ah, I feel your pain there - I've also had a mix up with my due dates. I have two doctors and neither of them can decide. They're a week apart, which concerns me bc I'm trying to avoid induction, which hopefully won't have to happen! Good luck :)

  • Thanks for the tips!  I am definitely getting ready to go for a walk!  Hopefully it triggers something downstairs!  Wink

this is not recommended. If she wants to breastfeed that will be less colostrum for the newborn to eat after its born. Or at least thats what i was told and makes sense.

this is not true at all.

Nipple stimulation is one of the go to induction methods when trying to avoid medical induction. Most women will not actually produce anything for the pump until after their milk comes in.

This. Plus, even if you do produce something when you pump, just slow down and do it less. In addition, your body will keep producing colostrum. The ladies who leak during pregnancy don't have less colostrum at birth, because the body regenerates it.?

And PP who is shaming her for wanting to self induce at 39 weeks. Dude. 39 weeks blows. Its a long week of waiting and being miserable and I don't blame her in the least for being done. Not to mention that none of these techniques will work until your body is ready.

Yes, she is! I can promise I will be trying to induce when I am 38 weeks. I am trying to avoid a medically necessary pitocin induction that will happen at 39 weeks. Of course, this all relies on the fact that the accupuncture and moxibustion flips my breech baby to vertex!!

    Good luck!!

  • Evening primrose oil (orally and suppository), birthing ball, acupressure points on your shoulders, semen, "gutter walks" (one foot on curb, one foot on street to independently rotate hips), and working around the house doing moderate labor. I shop-vac'ed the garage today and got a sweat on and it felt pretty good. Hot baths. Good luck! None of it has worked for #2 for me so far. :)

  • There's always drinking a cup of cumin or cinnamon tea. I've heard that'll help things along pretty well as opposed to the whole castor oil and killing your body before you even go into labor. Might not taste the greatest but cumin tea is really good for you on multiple levels besides helping induce labor, same for cinnamon tea.
  • Nipple stimulation and if you have a breast pump, I've heard it's best done that way.  I was going to try it last night but am missing the tubing so couldn't do it.  Good luck!  None of the OWT are working for  me.  We had sex yesterday and I did have some cramping last night but nothing seems to be happening today!

This exactly.  Wait until you are 39 weeks and see how ready to be done with pregnancy you are!

  • ugh week 38 and 39 are awful especially when you're dilated and having contractions that send you over the edge and then taper off..I'm going to go back to walking tomorrow because this pain is just nonsense! I too have tried everything but sex..kind of hard to do that when your lady bits are swollen from the pressures of being 39 weeks pregnant!

  • I tried it all with my previous pregnancy and nothing worked... she was too big, so I had to have a C-sec.

Stimulating the nipples releases oxytocin, which is the natural form of pitocin (what they give you to induce labor). It has no effect whatsoever on your milk production after baby's born. You may, however, start to leak colostrum if you use the pump to stimulate, which is sticky, so have a burp cloth close.

But whatever you do, DO NOT take castor oil!!! Worst mistake I ever made...
