LO rolled over!...and onto the floor :(

This is a PSA.  I'm feeling like a very bad mommy right now, so please don't flame me.  Just in case I'm not the only one, I had to post it....

LO has never rolled.  Not even a smidge.  He doesn't even lift his head up during tummy time.  Today he was on the couch in his boppy.  I stepped 10 feet away for about 30 seconds (I was grabbing his bottle off the counter).  He apparently can roll because he rolled off my couch and did a face plant onto the floor.  I took him to the doctor, and he's fine, just a bruise on his nose, so that's good.  But it could have been worse.

I was complacent, and I thought how he wasn't rolling yet, but you never know when they will.  It could be the moment you turn your back like me.

  • Mine hasn't rolled yet but I'll heed the warning! Sorry for your LO, glad he's okay Smile

  • Try not to feel too bad. My dad let me roll off the changing table when I was a baby and I'm no worse for wear! I know it's hard not to feel guilty and a good PSA for sure, but don't beat yourself up about it!

  • Aww. I'm sorry! Don't feel bad. I let LO roll over onto a pillow in the 5 seconds I turned my back. Thank you for posting to remind us.

I had a similar thing happen when DS was 5 weeks.  My dog was acting funny and then started throwing up, so I put DS down in the boppy on the couch to quickly scoop the dog off the couch and put her on the floor.  As soon as she stopped getting sick, she jumped back up on the couch and tried to burrow under the boppy, knocking it and baby onto the floor (about a foot and he was still in the pillow).  I felt absolutely horrible (and so did she; she hid in the corner for a while...).  DS is fine; he cried, but I picked him up and fed him, and then he was all smiles.  It's a hard lesson to learn, but at least our babies are okay!

  • At Chase's 2 month doctors appointment, his pediatrician told me not to let him roll off the changing table or a bed for the first time.  Then he told me not to worry if he rolls off the couch.  He said it happens all the time and he's never seen a baby get hurt.  He was my pediatrician and DH's pediatrician, so he has been a doctor for over 35 years.  I trust him.

  • Thank you for the PSA, and don't feel too bad. I think nearly every parent has done this. The whole time I was pregnant, everyone told me their "baby rolling off the couch" stories. Hugs.

  • Don't feel too bad. About a month ago I thought DS was asleep next to me on the couch, so I turned to reach for a blanket. In a matter of 5-10 seconds, he rolled of the couch and bumped his face in the carpet. Thankfully it was a short distance. So, even when you think they're asleep they might roll on you!

  • This happened to me too. Left LO for 10 seconds on a Boppy and she ended up on the floor (ours is hardwood too, not carpet). I don't know which of us cried more. Five weeks later, she's fine!

  • Same thing happened to me with DS1.  He was screaming, I was screaming.  Thank God DH was there to calm us both down.  Like a friend of mine said once, babies bounce.  If anyone flames you for this, they are idiots.  Kids fall.  You just got his first fall out of the way really early.

  • Thanks for the PSA.  I would have thought the boppy would prevent a baby from rolling off the sofa.  Also, it was an accident, no one should flame you for such thing.
