What does everyone think??

I know I am probably going to get blasted for this name but here goes.  We don't know the gender of the baby yet.  We were listening to music this morning and at the song Dear Prudence my husband said if the baby is a girl this will be her name.  I don't hate it, but I think our little girl (if in fact the baby is a girl) will get tortured for that name.  We are both HUGE Beatles fans.  I love the song, I think it is beautiful.  We have a definate boys name but we have been struggling with a girls name.  We can't agree on anything.  So my question, do you think a little girl will get made fun of if her name is Prudence.

Re: What does everyone think??

  • Confused eehhh.... she may... especially when she is in MS/HS and would probably be called a "prude."  I don't know, I wouldn't do it (sorry) but maybe it's just because it's NMS.  I totally feel your pain though, it is extremely hard to choose a girl's name.  What about Prudence as her MN?  It's rarely used in school so she wouldn't get slack for it.  Sorry....

  • No its fine.  I realize that a lot of people are not going to like it.  I want her middle name to be after my mom.  It just sounds nice when you have a reason for a name.  We still have some time and who knows the baby may be a boy and then we don't have a problem  :)
  • I do think it's quite an old fashioned name, and I can't say that I have known anyone (young or old) in my life with that name...Prudence...for some reason, as I type it, it mkes me think of another P name:  Penelope...

  • I like it and I think going with something Beatles related is always a good idea! She can always go by Prue, which is also a really cute nickname.

  • I love that song but I think Prudence is a stretch.  There are a lot of Beatles girl names, though!  Pam, Sadie, Martha, Julia, Michelle, Eleanor (Rigby), Rita, Lucy, Penny... I know there are more.  :-)

  • Yes. But many name we think will not be made fun of are. My oldest has Thomas for his first name and everyone says "Thomas the tank engine" I wouldn't worry about it.

  • I don't think you'll get blasted for this.  You may find a number of people who don't personally care for it but, it's an actual, indisputable REAL name with a long history of being a girl's name and, you are actually spelling it correctly.  I don't think there's anything to get get "blasted" over really.

It is an extremely dated name though, and you don't hear it much anymore.  It would fall into the category of "odd" name just for that reason.  Kids might make fun of it but, if she doesn't get made fun of for her name, she will probably get made fun of for something else.  For me, how other kids react is not the main concern.  Kids are petty and immature and can be cruel.  The question for would be, could she put this name on the top of a resume and be taken seriously?  I'm fairly certain she could.  I also think it's sweet that her dad picked out a name he really loved.  Of course, you have to love it too.  It's not MY favorite name but, in your shoes, I'd at least consider it.

  • Just calling it like I see it, yes, she will be made fun of with that name.  She will be teased about being "Prudence the Prude."  6th graders are just brutal and will make fun of any name that can be made fun of!

On the other side of the coin, that phase only lasts so long, and a "prude" is definitely not the worst thing your daughter could be called at that age from a parental perspective.

  • I actually like it, especially since you can shorten it to Prue - I think that's a really cute nickname!

  • I was just thinking... I know someone else who is a huge Beatles fan and they named their daughter Abbey Rose?

  • Actually Abigail was another name I was considering and Abbey would be cute.  I do like the nickname Pru.  I know there are a lot of other girl names on Beatles songs (and I like them all) but the words to some of those songs are not as sweet as Dear Prudence.  As I am thinking about it I am liking it more and more.  It is cute that my husband picked it out and it would be a cute story to tell her one day :)  Thanks everyone for your comments
  • I love it! I think it's a cute name.  As a teacher in the intermediate grades I can tell you that kids really don't even know what a prude is :)
