Re: top8 free- what do you eat?

  • I rarely ate at restaurants while top 8 free.  If I did go out, I ordered chicken grilled in olive oil, salads with no dressing, sweet potatoes or baked potatoes, and steamed veggies.

I also had to avoid citrus, tomato, all beans, pork and beef.  My typical meals at home were rice pasta with a chili sauce made with ground turkey, baked/grilled/boiled chicken, sliced turkey deli meat, rice dream with hershey's syrup, quinoa, potatoes, turkey sausage with broccoli over rice.  Not very extensive!

  • Hi there! I'm Top-8 free so maybe I can help you out a bit.

I have 2 restaurants that I eat out at--Chipotle and In-N-Out burger. At Chipotle I order 3 crispy tacos (corn shells) with plain white rice (they keep it in the back), carnitas, and fajita vegetables. The fajita vegetables are cooked in soybean oil but I'm OK with that (although I avoid it most of the time--really that's the only time I eat it is at Chipotle every few weeks). And at In-N-Out, the fries are just potatoes fried in cottonseed oil. So they're safe for me (as long as they're served in a different tray from DH and DD's burgers with cheese, etc.). I don't eat anywhere else besides those 2 places because the risk of cross-contamination isn't worth it for me. When I go out to eat, if I were to order off the menu (even speaking to the chef, etc.), I wouldn't enjoy myself. I'd spend every bite worrying that I would have a reaction. But that's me--with your LO it's different since it's not YOU having the reaction.

We cook at home a lot, obviously. Rice, potatoes, chicken, beef, lots of veggies. The crock pot is a godsend--we use it 2-3 times a week. Just throw in some tomatoes, a meat, a bunch of veggies and let it sit overnight. Oatmeal is a part of my morning in one way or another. There's a cookbook out there called Sophie-Safe Cooking. All the recipes are Top-8 free. She has muffins, breads, cakes, etc. and so I usually make some of those things to use for breakfast.

Let's see here... typical meals. Last night I had a slice of ham steak, basamati rice (seasoned), and broccoli and cauliflower. This morning for breakfast I had a bowl of oatmeal with cinnamon sugar, and Canadian bacon on the side. For lunch today my DH is making "me-safe" risotto with chicken broth, arborio rice, seasoning, and spinach.

I know I'm forgetting a lot--forgive me, it's early. If you have other questions I can definitely try to answer them. Being top-8 free has really made DH and I need to get creative in the kitchen, and we love it!

  • Grilled Chicken, Rice, Steamed Veggies, bring your own salad dressing...as in make your own salad dressing.  Its really hard.  Certain restaurants are better about it than others.  I've found Bugaboo to be the most flexible.

  • i didn't go to restaurants when i was top 8 free (i did still have wheat though -so i guess i was top 7)

If i did go it was always a mixed green salad and mixed fruit salad.. if i got sick of that i had a no-lettuce salad.  I just had them make me an avocado/tomato/cucumber/beans/corn/ (sometimes they had other choices) and with balsamic vinegar.  or i brought my own dressing with me..
