Baby size & delivery method

My doctor has had some concerns re: baby size and we've been watching a large fibroid as well; both of these issues have led my doctor to order several u/s throughout my pregnancy.  Baby was normal size at all u/s until the 36 week one, where they were suddenly estimated to be approximately 7 lbs.Yesterday, I had a final u/s before my induction next week and baby was estimated to be 8 lbs, 10 oz and body and head were measuring large. Plus, I was diagnosed w/excess AF (just barely outside of the range).  I was sent to L&D for an NST but baby was doing great, so doctor released me and has kept the induction scheduled for next Thursday.  Anyway, I'm really freaked out at the idea of having such a large baby vaginally. For some reason, my doctor is convinced that the u/s are wrong, but the techs have been insistent that baby is very large.  I REALLY don't want to have a c/s unless it's necessary but I am terrified of just being ripped apart in some awful manner (I'd rather opt for the c/s given the choice of these two scenarios).  Also, FWIW, I'm a very small girl (5'2" and 120 lbs pp),. Anyone have experience in this area??

  • No experience.. but I definately get your concern!! I would probably feel the same way. Just remember, no matter what happens.. it is one day of your life in exchange for the rest of your life.. :)  Once it's over, you have the best gift of all.

  • My baby girl was exactly 8lbs 10 oz at birth, and I gave birth vaginally with no meds. I'm a lot taller than you (5'8"), but I'm pretty small-framed/thin.

I did have a small 1st degree internal tear, but other than that my delivery went smoothly.

Try not to stress yourself out, you'll be amazed at what your body can do!

  • I'm also a small girl 5'3" size 4 pp and gave birth vaginally to a 9 lb 9 oz baby on june 8th.  no one had any idea she was that big. don't worry too much.  it's amazing what your body is capable of!  at 3 weeks later my body feel pretty much back to normal.  my only complaint now is exhaustion due to lack of sleep.  pardon my lack of capitalization but i'm typing with one hand while breastfeeding.  good luck!

  • By ultrasound, my baby measured 9lbs 10oz. I ended up scheduling a primary c-section because all of the measurements showed he was in the 98th percentile plus. I also was making no progress (he was not engaged, hadn't dropped, not dilated, and not effaced). All of my u/s had shown a larger baby. I decided on the c-section because of the fact that he was estimated in the upper 9s. Had he been estimated in the upper 8's I would have elected for an induction.

Although the estimate was off (he was 8lbs, 15oz), the doctor said with confidence that I would have ended up with a c-section. He was stuck up under my ribs and one of the doctors was nearly standing on my stomach trying to break him loose. I am glad I opted for the c-section now knowing that I would have had one regardless, but I will also never be ever to deliver vaginally. If your doctor thinks an induction has a favorable rate of success, I would attempt it. My doctor said I wouldnt have a favorable rate of success.

Just watch your progression during the induction. My doctor said if I wanted to try an induction that he would want the standard rate of progress, ie dilating 1cm an hour. He said if at any point that I stalled, it would be time for a c-section.

Good luck. Remember it is your decision and you need to do what is best for you. The night before my c-section I started crying because of how scheduled and clinical the birth had become. In the end I am glad for my health that I went for the c-sec....

  • I was 5' 5" and 119 lbs pre-pregnancy and delivered a 8 lb, 5 oz baby vaginally without pain meds.  I had a minor 2nd degree tear and felt fine starting 2-3 weeks pp.  U/s weight measurements are notoriously off by up to a pound.  If your doctor isn't concerned and thinks you can still have a successful induction and vaginal delivery, personally I'd try that before opting for a c-section.  But good luck with whatever you decide!

  • I am 5'2, was 124lbs PP and I just had a 8lb 12oz baby vaginally, his head barley fit in the little hat they gave us. My midwife was great and I didn't need a single stitch and I promise I did not have a huge vajayjay before baby.  Don't worry too much or you will stress during delivery. Also a friend's doctor said her baby was almost 10 lbs from weekly u/s scans and she turned out to be 6.13 lbs.

You guys are making me feel better. One of my friends IRL (who is probably a size 6) just had a baby that was 8 lbs 10 oz and she had a 2nd degree tear that she said wasn't bad. I'm reassured to see that some of you were the same way. I've progressed (nearly 3 cm dilated, 70% effaced, baby dropped) so my doctor was still talking induction. She doesn't want me going any later than this week b/c of size, though.  It sounds like I need to just keep trusting my doctor and hoping my body will accommodate. I know LO will be worth it in the end.

The reason your doctor is convinced it's wrong is because the growth estimate u/s late in pregnancy are notoriously wrong.  SIL has gone overdue with both of her girls, and the late u/s were both over a pound off.  In the case of her second dd, they said the baby was 9lb, 6 oz and she had her four days later, and she was only 8lb, 2oz.  So try not to worry!  I know it's hard, but you'll be fine!!
  • I am bigger than you (5'10" and about a size 8 pre pregnancy), but I delivered a 9lb 5oz baby vaginally with no pain meds. I did end up with a 2nd degree tear, but my MW said that was entirely due to her hand being up by her face and how fast she came (I only pushed for about 30 minutes).

You can definitely do this! It is so, so unlikely that your body made a baby you can't birth.

  • I'm 5'2" and was 97lbs prepregnancy. At 20 weeks ultrasound the baby was at 50ish percentile and they thought I was going to have an 8 lb baby. The doctor did say that's a really big baby for me but at 32 weeks, the baby was predicted to be only about 7lbs at birth.

I had a 6lbs 7oz baby in the end. Had to be forceps assisted because I was pushing for 2 hours and both baby and I were getting exhausted. I had a 3rd degree tear, recovery wasn't quite a cake walk but I prefer that over c/s if I had a choice.

If you are having epidural, you won't feel the tear but afterward yes of course during recovery. You will feel heaviness and soreness. Mine took about 3 weeks to start to feel better. GL with your decision!

  • DD was 8 lbs 10oz and I delivered vaginally. I had an episiotomy and a small tear but think her being sunnyside up, my having some cartilidge on pubic bone that was difficult to get her past and my being on magnesium and having a hard time pushing all contributed to that. It is possible to deliver larger babies vaginally. I have a friend who even had an eleven pound baby at home with no complications.

I just want to say that I did not have an epi but I didn't feel the tear during delivery, and then they numbed the area to stitch it up, so I didn't feel it until I was in my recovery room. I had a 2nd degree tear and it started feeling better in the middle of last week- I'm almost back to normal now (although I am still taking tylenol, but I have minimal discomfort).

  • My LO  was small, 6lb4oz and I delivered vaginally. I was 120 lb pre pregnancy and am 5'6. I did end up with a 2nd degree tear but it wasn't bad IMO...and I'm a whimp.

I just wanted to say that they estimated her to be just over 5lbs and she ended up 6lb 4oz. They could be wrong either way (smaller OR bigger)...not to be the Debbie Downer :/
