Babies: 6 - 9 Months

skipping cereal

Wow, I cannot believe we are almost officially on this 6-9 board!! My LO is 5 1/2 months and I have a question about skipping cereals.Thought you ladies with older LOs could help me!

At my LOs 4 month appt. our pedi gave the go-ahead to start solids - first with cereal and then on to solids. Well, I waited until last week to start cereal, but it made him super constipated. Our pedi said that cereal is basically just for teaching babies how to learn to swallow. My LO was good at eating the cereal for the week I gave it to him...Can I just skip all cereal (rice and oatmeal) and go straight to solids when he turns 6 months? What have you ladies done? Thanks!!

Re: skipping cereal

  • We skipped rice cereal and went straight to mushy finger foods and purees at six months. We still give him oatmeal for the iron since I'm BFing.
  • Loading the player...
  • We never did rice but we do oatmeal.  I use old fashioned rolled oats, grind them in the mini chop and cook 1/4 cup oats to 3/4 cups water then freeze.  I will usually give her apples in the oatmeal, which helps to contradict the binding aspect of it.

  • I am also BFing. I will be making DS's purees at 6 months - should I mix in some oatmeal so that he gets the iron?

  • Maybe mix some fruit with oatmeal for breakfast.  Lean meats also work as does broccoli.  DD loves to gnaw on broccoli, cooked or raw!

  • Good idea! Gosh, this is a whole new world. It's crazy to think about how, up until now, we all haven't really had to think about what our LOs need nutritionally! I'm nervous!! =)

  • Don't be!  You're still getting all the nutrition in from BF.  I think this starting solids thing is as much a learning experience for us as it is for them.

I honestly find it easier to give table foods than I did purees, that way I don't have to think about what I'm going to feed her, I just give her what we are eating.  I made pancakes yesterday - ate a couple, gave CJ one... the same with the leftovers this morning.  For lunch she will get chicken and pasta with some zucchini and maybe mango if she wants it.  We are having grapefruit chicken for dinner... I guess we will be introducing grapefruit tonight!

  • We did oatmeal for a week, and then I only gave it to her mixed into purees that were a little runny.
  • DS gets plugged up easily, so I introduced pears and prunes first, then started mixing in some oatmeal.

Oatmeal is easier to digest, btw.

Rice is one of the least allergenic foods, which is why it's introduced first, generally. I'm not a doctor, but if theres not a family history of food allergies, I'd be less worried.

  • *sigh*  I tried not to do rice.  I do have two boxes because I bought them on sale for 50 cents a box.  I use them to thicken up purees that are a little runny.  He does get oatmeal for breakfast.   My mother on the other hand, got mad because one morning I wouldn't give him strait rice cereal.  When I said that he doesn't eat it because it has no nutrients she got pissed and bought him a box.  Now whenever he is over there she feeds him rice cereal.  It's not that big of a deal but I wish she would choose something better.

  • I wish we would have skipped rice cereal, it backed her up terribly! We even tried oatmeal and it did the same thing. Poor thing has a hernia from all the pushing. She's been on fruits and veggies since 4 1/2 months now.  I will definitely skip the cereal with the next baby..

  • My daughter would not eat any cereals or purees.  We went on to mushy finger foods from our plates and she loves them....
