NBR: Help me change my rained out BBQ menu!

DH and I host a 4th of July party every year, and this year we decided to have it on the 3rd to accommodate people who had other plans.  We're expecting about 25 people, and the weather forecast for tomorrow is now atrocious- heavy rain starting exactly when people are scheduled to arrive, w/ severe lightning and wind :(

We're going to have the party anyway and probably get stuck inside, but I've already done some cooking and lots of shopping and cleaning.  The problem is that I don't know how possible it's going to be for DH to run outside and grill the burgers and dogs if the weather is really that bad.... what other "indoor" dishes can I add last minute (without spending too much more money)? I have baked ziti, pasta salad, regular salad and apps.  Other thoughts?

  • Sounds fun!

I don't know how much time you have or what your taste style is.. but if you are having pasta and salad, maybe some garlic bread or sticks.

DH and I always love baked chicken wings, they are usually more budget friendly than chicken breasts, and work great for snacks and appetizers.

    Thats all I got. Lol.

  • Do you have an attached garage where DH could open the garage door and grill without having to be totally exposed? Could you maybe move the party into the garage?

You could also ask a few of your attendee's if they have george foremans to bring 'em along!

  • If you were making your own patties for hamburger just make sloppy joes instead and put it in a crock pot.  You can do your hot dogs under the broiler in the oven.

  • Baked buffalo wings (I do half buffalo, half teriyaki). The flour and fridge parts are key:

Kabobs- beef, chicken, shrimp, veggie, etc- work well in the oven also. Or you could do some kind of meatball in the slow cooker. Chili might work too.

  • Ground beef with Nachos with all the sides...I could eat just that =) My hubs puts hotdogs in the broiler when he is craving & its raining(he uses the toaster though) Also we have a Presto electric griddle..its like $20.00 and is pretty big for an extra cooking surface (makes 8 grilled cheese at once)

  • Thanks for the suggestions! I have a grilling pan, a griddler and a foreman, so hopefully between those things we can get a few burgers and dogs made if need be.  I made some meatballs for the crockpot to go with the ziti, and I picked up some chicken too.  I also remembered that we got an indoor s'mores maker for our shower that was in the basement this whole time... I was bummed to waste the ingredients b/c I bought them to use around the firepit, but now we can do it indoors :)

Keep your fingers crossed that it's just a passing storm!

This sounds like a good plan and a great menu! Mmmm, s'mores! :) You could always do loose meat sandwiches/taverns if you don't want to do the burgers inside. The meat in the crockpot is a lot easier! Something that I invented this summer is a twist on the classic s'more, and it is to die for. We put a blob of oreo fluff in the s'more and it adds a little cold to the warmth of the toasted marshmallow! YUM!
