Need reassurance - EBF and poops

My DD has not pooped in 3 days.  Her belly is soft and she has good bowel sounds.  She has plenty of wet diapers each day (8-10).  I know that it's perfectly normal for BF babies to go days between poops, but I thought that didn't start until they were 2-3 months old.  Viv will be 5 weeks on Saturday, 7/2.  Please just tell me it's totally normal.  I feel like she's fine, but as a FTM, I'm a worrier.

Thanks!

Re: Need reassurance - EBF and poops

  • This recently happened with my LO. She went 4 full days without pooping and then made up for lost time! It is going to be ok. Just be ready for some serious dumpage when it finally arrives.

  • The literature I received from my LC said that after 1month of age babies can go up to a week without a poop.

FWIW - my little guy Always poops when he's in his vibrating chair. Always. If you have one, maybe pop her in it for a bit and see if it shakes out the poop just to make you feel better.

  • Normal. Constipation in babies is measured by consistency, not frequency. If baby starts pooping something you haven't seen before, then you worry. Not if they take a poop break.

This is good to know! Thanks for the info.

  • My LO is on day 6 of a poop strike.  She just doesn't like to poop, I guess!  If she gets to a week with no poop, I give her half a suppository (per the doctor) and that does the trick.
