Natural, active birth at Illinois Masonic? What was your experience?

After all the reading I have done, I am now considering a natural, active birth.  I plan to deliver at Illinois Masonic and am wondering how open they are to this.  Are they respectful to the mother-to-be's wants or do they try to push/encourage their own agenda?  I have yet to speak to my doctor but just wanted to see if any of you have had experience with this.  I am also considering a doula so if you have any recs I would also appreciate those.

 TIA!!!

  • I've attended 8 births at Masonic as a doula, but only with the midwives who are pretty decent. I LOVE Ann King the one midwife. The main labor and delivery rooms are very small and the bathrooms are less then great, however the ABC rooms(alternative birthing center) is nice. Big rooms, big bed, tub to be in and you are left alone for the most part. That being said I'm not sure if OB's can use the ABC or just the midwives. I would discuss your plans with your provider ASAP and see what their reaction is, if it is not very supportive I would switch now. A supportive birth team is worth their weight in gold.

As for getting a doula I am a little biased, but I think it is always helpful to have that extra support no matter what type of birth you are hoping to have. Doulamatch.net is a great website to look at lots of doulas at once.
