Food Allergy

Talk to me about egg in Vaccines

Asher tested positive for egg a while back, but after two food challenges we figured out that he is allergic to raw/semi cooked eggs and not to eggs that have been baked into things. Asher's allergies happen in his intestines, and he has never had local reactions to proteins but he has had them to fruits.

Anyway, when he had his flu shot several months ago it was done in a hospital with a two hour observation with no reaction.  So we thought we were safe to continue with vaccines that contain egg perservative and today they gave him two one being the MMR.

Well he reacted today, I'm not sure if it was because he got two or what.  He did not need his epipen, but he did get double dosed with bene and was given a nebulizer treatment.  We hung out for a couple hours after that before going home and he seems fine now.    Has this happened to anyone else?

Re: Talk to me about egg in Vaccines

  • My understanding is that each batch can be different regarding how much egg is in the vaccine.  My allergist prefers to give the flu shot, for example, in her office just in case there is a reaction.  My pedi was more than happy to supply the vaccine and have me hand carry it over to the allergist's office for her to administer.

Luckily DS#3 hasn't reacted to a vaccine yet.  But it is always a possibility.  Glad your LO is ok!

Yeah safer is better.  We did all previous vaccines in the hospital.  Since there was no reaction we thought it was safe to have his pedi administer the shots...not anymore.  His next set is in two months and I've already scheduled a two hour administration and observation for them.

  • Interesting! Alex tested positive for an egg allergy (skin test) and we confirmed that with a food challenge. It seems to be a somewhat mild allergy because he also can handle eggs in baked goods, but the couple of times he's had just one bite of scrambled eggs, he got a red bumpy rash all around his mouth. We were told the flu vax and all other standard vaccines for his age should be fine, and he hasn't had any reactions. (He's 2.5 and he's had pretty much all the standard ones except Hep B.)
