I feel defeated by 'the ladies'...

I am struggling.  I have been working on getting Dorian and I off the nipple shield and finally this past Monday we were able to do it and have been off the shield ever since.  My problem is this that we are now having latching/milk production issues.  She will stay on when I first start nursing since my milk is letting down, but once the let down stops she becomes impatient and releases from the boob and then I can't get her back on, frustration insues (for both of us....but mostly her) and then all hell breaks loose.  I then have to end up giving her a bottle of BM since she will not got back to the boob.  Weird thing is that the early mornings are her best time to feed since I have more milk and she is in bed with us (I nurse her in bed at her early feeding).  She has a small mouth so I am not sure if the latch issue is due to her not being able to 'hold on' and suckle properly, nipple confusion or what?

Also-how the heck are you moms able to express so much milk after feeding LO and then 1.5 hours later be able to have enough milk to nurse again??  This is my BIGGEST problem.  I just started to build up my stash this past weekend so I am pumping twice a day-once after Dorian's early morning feeding and then again at night after I put her down for bed.  I am only getting 1-1 1/2 oz. from each boob and that's it.  I then don't have anything for her to eat after the morning pump.  Sigh.  I need help.  My boobs are winning....or losing for that matter.

  • Can you call a local lactation consultant? It's really hard to give any advice but they will come watch her try to eat and help you guys.

I express a lot of milk but I only do it after the morning feeding.  I drink a LOT of water during the day which I think helps quite a bit.

  • Try nursing her in a laid-back position. More info here:

Obviously, it won't work for every feeding forever, but while you're working on getting her to latch and stay on it might help a lot. Poke around the site - it's really interesting research.

  • just posted this on another post lol i'm blowing up the boards cause LO is sleeping wahoo! but my ob put me on reglan (metoclopramide's the generic) it helps up your milk supply. its technically for nausea but it makes you lactate like crazy. But I used to pump and supplement with formula LO was in the NICU but some nights when DH was holding LO I would do a "power pump" pump for an hour strait and when I would track my pumpings it would always up it. But I didn't BF exclusively until this month when if finally caught on and then decided I didn't like it lol but Keep up the good work BFing is crazy hard :)

  • I don't really have any advice for you but wanted to let you know you are not alone and I sympathize with you.  I've had nothing but problems too.  If it makes you feel any better, you are getting about twice as much pumping as I do and it doesn't matter how long it's been since I nursed and/or pumped.  It is crazy hard so good for you that you keep trying your best.
