(almost) 6 month old & starting cereal?

I am wondering when I should be starting cereal and what kind to start with... DD is couple of days away from 6 months (actual), 4 1/2 months (adjusted), and is taking about 5.5 oz/bottle every 4.5 hrs.  She downs the whole thing w/ no problem and seems like she's just not satisfied.

I am thinking its time for cereal, but when did you start feeding cereal to LO? and how much and what kind?

thanks!!  jen

  • I had the same problem with DS recently...check with your Ped first, but mine said that Single Grain Rice or Single Grain Oatmeal cereal was ok, once a day for now. I went with Oatmeal because of the fiber (DS needs all the fiber he can get if you catch my drift, stupid Neosure!)

  • We followed www.wholesomebabyfood.com   and with our pedi's go ahead started at 6 months actual (3.5 adjusted).  We did not start with cereal... we started with fruits and veggies.  We didn't add cereal until we had a good amount of fruits started to combat constipation.  They were probably 7.5 months before we did cereal.

  • We started at 6 actual, 3 adjusted (seemed to soon).  neo told us to start with oatmeal.  however much they can eat is fine to give, but they probably won't eat a lot the first time.

If you follow the box instructions for first time use, it's super runny and Andrew didn't do well so we had to make it thicker.

  • We just started playing around with some cereal (organic brown rice by gerber). I also found that when I followed directions the first time it was too runny, especially b/c I use pumped BM and it makes it runnier as time goes on. He seems to like the spoon. I'd say most of it gets on him rather than in him, but it's more for fun and getting used to it than nutrition. After cereal, I plan to start avocado in hopes of packing in some extra calories and fat.
