While being pregnant have you gotten a Bug Bite?

It?s been about a week now that I got 4 bug bites in different spots on my legs. I can't tell if there mosquito or something else. They hurt like hell and I want to itch the crap out of them but instead I have rubbed Alcohol, Peroxide and some bug ointment my DH gave me but I don't recall the name. Also when I shave I try not to go near them or over them. Now usually my skin is very sensitive to a bug bite but this is the worst I have ever seen one ( I am guessing because I am pregnant it does affect differently) Just wanted to see if anyone had any suggestions or can you relate?

Here are some gross pic's of two of the bites.

  • I don't want to freak you out, but get to the doc asap.  Just for peace of mind because IMO, those don't look good at all.

    I agree!

  • So I havent received any bug bites yet (thank goodness), so I'm probably not going to be too much help from current experience...

First of all, when you look at the bite wound itself, does it look like a single hole or two holes right next to each other? One hole = most likely a mosquito or something...2 holes = more than likely a spider bite. The top pic you posted (and maybe its just my computer) looks like you have 2 holes on it, which is why I ask. (if anything maybe I can at least help you figure out what bit you! LOL)

Whenever I've gotten a bug bite before, I've always tried making an X indentation directly in the bite with my finger nail to help control the itching when I dont have anything handy to put on it. I might also suggest maybe putting witch hazel on it - it's a natural astringent, so it should help clean it out, but at the same time its really soothing on the itch. You can get witch hazel at any drug store for really really cheap and just apply it with a cotton ball.

  • Looks like a deer tick bite and the rash that accompanies Lyme's Disease.  Definitely go see a doc!

  • I had a few bug bites on my legs and they did a similar rash looking thing.  I went in to the OB and they gave me a prescription strength creme to use.  I used it for 2 weeks and it got better but didn't go away.  So, they sent me to a determologist and because I was a new patient it took 5 weeks to get in.  The rash was much better but not completely gone.  All she did was give me a stronger creme to put on it.  That was yesterday and I have put the creme on 3 times and my leg looks SO much better already!

However, you can't be too careful in pregnancy and you should at least have your OB look at it incase it's infected. I would call asap!

  • Well I called my Dr. and will be going in on Monday. I had a co-worker/friend check out my bites and there is one puncture hole...so it looks like it was a mosquito. Plus from her opinion she said it looks like a mosquito bite and when I explained it to my Dr. he stated from the sound of it sounds like a mosquito bite and then gave me some instructions to do over the weekend. Told me to wash the infected area w/warm water & soap, No scratching!, I can make a paste with baking soda & water to bring down swelling and also can use calamine lotion. Then for me to for sure come in on Tuesday and take a look. So thanks everyone for the advice and hopefully this will help and on Tuesday hopefully we can get an exact answer.

  • Glad to hear that the doc doesn't think it's a spider bite, because that is the very first thing I thought when I saw your photo...and I work in the ER, so I see them often. It does still look infected though...if the DIY paste and what not does not work, please see a doctor...even if you have to go to the ER since it is a holiday weekend, please do, because you may need an antibiotic. The sooner you catch it, the less potent the antibiotic will have to be...which is best for baby. Hopefully you get some relief, those look painful!  Oh and I live in Arkansas...so I get mosquito bites ALL the time...but I have never had anything look like that!  But...what I typically do while pregnant is use a colloidal cream, something like Aveeno...and take benedryl if I get very many, which usually knocks out the itching.

  • I agree, I'd see a doctor - maybe just the Take Care clinic or something. I've had big bites the last few weeks and none of them morphed into anything like that.

    Sorry you're dealing with that!

Awww thanks for the advice. I will see if we will go to one of those urgent care places before the ER and see if it is something worse. If things don't get better by Saturday.

I know I got here late, but another trick to help it not itch so much is put on a little bit of Tiger Balm.  I was in Thailand at the beginning of my pregnancy and got eaten alive due to not being able to use bug spray.  Tiger Balm helped me keep my sanity.  Also, just to make you feel better I have had mosquito bites swell up like this before as well.  It only happened once, but they looked impressivly big.

  • I have been getting eaten alive by mosquitos for over a month and my bites never look like that.

The girls have all given you great advice. Hope your Dr gets it solved when you see them.

  • I get bitten every day because its hot where I live and theres loads of mosquitos, but none of my bites are any different to pre-pregnancy, just normal little ones that are gone by the next day.

I would get them checked out if I were you

  • I just got off of antibiotics for a bug bite.  It started small and grew to about 3" on my thigh.  It looked very similar to your pictures.  I had waited about two days before I went to the dr.  I wish I had gone in earlier, because once I started the antibiotics it started getting better within days.  Bug bites are scary especially when your pregnant!  Hope yours go away soon!

I lived in AR for awhile also, and I agree--that doesn't look like mosquito bites (I also grew up in Tampa, where they're a CONSTANT nuisance, and again...doesn't really look like a mosquito bite).

Not to disregard your friend, but it really looks like a spider bite, or a tick bite (which I got SEVERAL of while living in AR). I'd really go in to an Urgent Care or something this weekend, b/c like pp have said--you might need antibiotics.
