Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

s/o receptive language skills

DS is 16 months and can only now follow 1 step directions. Like, "Go get Scout" or "Give this to Daddy" - he started this within the past few weeks only.

When did your child start following 1 step directions?

  • If memory severs, one-step directions are "typical" at 12-15 months, but that just means MOST children, not ALL.

I will answer your question because you asked, but remember that every child is different and it is most likely that yours is just FINE.  Check with your pedi (maybe even the nurses' line?) if you are worried.  DS started responding to one-step instructions at around 8 months, but he was also really mobile early, so I'm guessing it was easier for him to respond, you know?

  • He's on the verge of doing two steps now... sometimes I have to break them down its a 50/50 chance so sometimes I say get that remote and bring it to me and he will other times I have to say get that remote and then when he has it give it to me. He's been doing one step for a few months and is just starting to do the two step requests in the last few weeks.

DS started crawling at 10 months, so not early at all. He was 5 weeks early and it seems he has hit most of his milestones right at the late end of typical for his adjusted age.

So, sounds to me like he's right on track for his perfect little self, no?  :)

    Very true Wink
  • I'm not sure when Tegan started following one step directions, but I didn't really start giving them to her, consistently, until she started walking at 14.5 months. Now, she can easily follow two step directions and will, with enough motivation and repetition, follow three step directions.
