Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

What can I get (quickly) for a friend who just had her baby?

I'm visiting a friend who just had her baby this afternoon, and like a dolt I forgot to get anything for her.  I got her a baby shower gift, but I feel like I can't show up empty handed, especially since I think she has had a really rough recovery.  What gifts did you really appreciate when you first came home from the hospital?  Gifts for you--chocolate, books, flowers?  Gifts for the baby?

I'm going to be in a super rush to get there, so I can only really stop at a store between me and the subway, so my choices are a drugstore, grocery store, bakery, flower store, bookstore, or toystore.

Stop at the grocery store, pick up dinner fixings, and make her dinner while you're there. Or get some freezer meals that she can make easily.

Absolutely this. Or a giftcard for local takeout

  • I would say go to the bookstore and pick up a couple books.  My opinion is you can have too many clothes and toys, but you can never have too many books.

  • Anything but a book.  I had no time to read when DD was that little.  I'd stop at the grocery store and pick up stuff to make her a dinner plus a little extra that can be frozen.  Also, offer to throw a load of laundry in of do some picking up for her if she needs it.  Or, just sit with the baby so she can take a shower or a nap.

  • Go to the bakery and grab some cupcakes.  That's what my H did. I LOVED it and I didn't have to worry about lugging it home when we left the hospital.

ETA: You did say she just had the baby, right? So, she is still in the hospital, right?

  • I'd stop in the bookstore and get two things.  1.  Your fav childhood book.  Write a nice message in it!  2.  A newspaper.  People always forget to grab the paper of the day the baby was born and its comes in handy with the baby book.

Woops!  My post was a little misleading.  I'm visiting her this afternoon, but she had the baby a few days ago and is home now.  Thanks for all of the ideas!  I'm sure she would love cupcakes, but I'm not much of a cook so I'll leave that to an expert!

  • I agree with any food!!  It was so nice to have people bring over lunch/dinner.  Something easy to put in the oven or already made.  Take care of the mom!

  • Stop at the bakery and grab some muffins or something equally good!  I remember a friend bringing some awesome homemade muffins after DD was born and I loved them.  They lasted for breakfast for several days.
  • I think that some sort of food treat is a great idea.  Like chocolate, muffins, or cupcakes depending on which one you'd think she'd like the most.
