My son does not have a gluten issue but i though i would post this here b/c it's the first time I'm hearing it and couldn't believe it.
Someone on a different board wrote that Strawberries are contaminated with gluten unless you grow your own.
Some say that it depends on the state. But i would check the ingredients if you buy strawberries and have an issue with gluten.
Re: strawberries have gluten??
Fresh strawberries? There will be nothing listed in the ingredients.
I'm assuming they're talking about possible cross-contamination in cases where the producer uses straw on the ground...? (Straw is the stiff grassy portions of wheat, barley, oat, etc. that gets dried, bundled up and sold in bales.) If that's the case, then thoroughly washing the fruit, which should always be done anyway, should take care of it.
That said, I have always wanted to do straw bale gardening, where you plant your veggies right into the top and sides of a bale of straw. It lets you plant a lot of stuff without taking up much room. But with as sensitive as my kids and I are to gluten, I decided not to risk it.
I know I read a while back that there's a certain fruit (for the life of me I can't remember! But it's a tree fruit.) that gets pollinated by hand, and they use a wheat flour while doing it to help the pollen stick or something???
that is crazy to me. i would have never even though fresh or frozen would have an issue. it really amazes me.
I've never heard of this. My son has celiac, he eats strawberries and he's never had a reaction (and I know how he'll react if he gets gluten in his system.)
I'm going to look into this, though.

I have heard this. BUT I've also heard that the possibility of cross contamination is very slight and you'd have to be extremely sensitive to react.
I know that growers around here will specify that they have specific fields for fruits and veggies sep from wheat fields.
