July 2011 Moms

anyone else hoping to avoid a 4th of july baby?

I really really do not want a 4th of July baby.  I want him to come when he is ready but I really would like him to either come before or wait until after.  This is for several reasons.  One- I live right outside of DC, right next to a harbor which means LOTS of traffic!  I don't want to get stuck in traffic, trying to get to the hospital.  Two- I've heard so many stories of hospitals being soooo full on holidays.  I know a few friends who had babies on holidays (i.e. cinco de mayo) and had to wait in the triage for a bed and couldn't get an epi b/c it was too late.  My dr said the same thing and with one anesthesiologist at the hospital after 7pm for the entire hospital, I am afraid that they won't get to me in time.  As you can see, as my due date is right around the corner, I have had enough time to over think everything.  I'm just anxious!

Re: anyone else hoping to avoid a 4th of july baby?

  • Nope, but that's my due date and I'm Canadian.
    I wouldn't mind a Canada day baby though...hmm..

  • Yes! Used to live in Alexandria & traffic comes to a standstill on the 4th. I've worked every holiday at a hospital and I'd have to say that resources aren't to limited on the 4th.  Not as bad as NYE or Thanksgiving. I'm hoping the Lactation Consultant is there on the 4th. GL!

  • Yup, in Atlanta there's an annual 4th of July 10K run with 60,000 participants!  The course passes by our hospital and closes several of the main roads.  If we had to get to the hospital then there's only one back way to take.  Luckily I doubt he'll come that early!

  • Funny. I was just saying how I would not mind a 4th of July baby.

If I had to pick one holiday of the year that would be the best one.

    1. You always get fireworks for your birthday.

    2. Its not a gift giving holiday so you don't have to worry about getting one present instead of two (I know some Christmas babies who always complained to me about this lol).

    3. When she's older she always gets her birthday off.

I wonder why the hospital would be busier on the 4th? It's funny...we had our hospital tour on a Saturday and the entire maternity ward was empty. Seems to me like nowadays more and more doctors are scheduling C-sections and inductions in order to have more control over their weekend plans....sad.  Anyways I go to a group with 5 doctors so I would HOPE that one of them is on call for the 4th...just in case.

  • While we'll be thrilled whenever it is that LO decides to arrive, we hope it's not on the 4th. We would just hate for him/her to share their birthday with a holiday. Especially once they are older, I think birthdays get put on the back burner when they're on or very close to a holiday. It's just easy for people to forget that not only is it a holiday but it's someone's birthday.
  • My induction is actually scheduled for July 4th in the evening, but unless he comes before then I wont have him until the 5th.

  • DH is outright rooting for a 4th of July baby. He and DS share a birthday so I guess he figures she should have something extra for her birthday too. I don't really care one way or the other.

I wound love it- there's always fireworks, a day off, and a party, what could be better? I guess it's an unpopular opinion. My hospital had an anesthesiologist just for the maternity ward 24/7. The only down side is that my OB is on-call Friday/Saturday and if I have Baby on the 4th her partner would deliver me. I like her, but she's not 'mine'.

  • I'm sure it completely depends on the hospital, but i know mine doesn't schedule inductions or c/s on holidays so i'm thinking it'd be less crowded than usual. My first was born on new years day, so technically after the NYE holiday, but still a holiday day and it wasn't overly crowded or anything.

ditto the pp about being one of the best holidays to be born on. I'm kind of hoping for a 4th baby, that'd make 2 kids that get fireworks on their birthdays, but also hoping i don't have to go another 3 days!

  • I'd love it! But having lived in Northern VA for some time, I would not have wanted it to happen while living there so I understand!!

  • I thought it would be neat to have a July 4th baby, but I guess I was looking at it from the celebration standpoint. You are way more realistic and levelheaded with thinking about traffic and hospital staff. I just see birthday parties with fireworks.

July 4th is DH's favorite holiday so he does not want the baby to come now because then he'll have to plan his celebration agenda around the baby's birthday. He is probably safe though since I am not due until the end of the month, but I would not complain about LO coming sooner.

Great points!  I never looked at it on the brighter side.

I am mostly worried about the hospital being too crowded  and it being 4th of July, I am only imagining the worst...people doing stupid things with fireworks and getting burned...and having to go to the hospital.  This wouldn't impact L&D beds but our hospital has only one anesthesiologist for the entire hospital after certain hours and as you can tell... I will NEED my epi STAT! :)

  • My DH is a police officer and is required to work every year on the 4th, so we're hoping to avoid that day for that reason.  I'd hate for DH to have to work on LO's birthday every year!

Gotcha! I'm with you on the epi!! That will be the first thing I ask about as soon as I'm admitted!

  • I'm due on the 4th and I'm hoping to avoid it also (hopefully earlier!) There is already a 4th birthday in the family and every year it is lost amongst all the holiday festivities. I would like for my LO to have her own day.

  • DH's birthday is on the 4th of July and loves it.  He spent his birthdays playing in the sun with friends and family.  As he got older he drank beer at BBQs with friends and families and never had to work or go to school.

He was actually talking about it this morning all the amazing birthday memories.  I would LOVE to have my birthday on the 4th.

  • I am!!  If she decides to show up that day then of course there's nothing I can do about it and I'd be extremely happy.  I'd also like to avoid the 5th, since my friend's annoying husband's birthday is 7/5 and he's been making this birth about him by constantly saying he wants the baby will be born on his birthday.  I really want her to have her own day. And I'm scheduled for a c-section on the 6th anyway, so hopefully she'll wait until then.

Oooooh, I did not even think about that!  I'm due on the 4th, not that I think LO will come on his/her due date. At least I know how to get there the back way already, but I still bet that traffic around there is going to blow.

  • I am with you. I am hoping to avoid the July 4th baby. I know way to many people with that birthday and I would like DD#2 to have her own birthday. DD#1 shares her birthday with my twin SILs and I just don't want DD#2 to have to share a birthday as well. We are not very good at planning our births!!

  • I am due ont he 5th and have been saying all along that I hope she isn't a 4th baby, but my opinion is starting to change as I am ready to have her here!! :)

Also, my family owns retail stores, and I realized that as long as the 4th doesn't fall on a Saturday, we would always have her Birthday off!

  • This whole pregnancy I've said I didn't want to have him on the 4th bc I didn't want him to share his bday with a holiday. But... now I'm SO READY for him to come, I could care less when. If he wants to come on the 4th I would be the happiest mommy around.

  • We are also due on the 4th. I would like to avoid it also. not because of the traffic or hospital. we live in such a small community it wouldnt really matter, but I just want her to have her own day, and I would be a growly mommy if our frends and family rushed throught our daughters bday every year because they wanted to go to the lake or go drink at someone elses house.

The 4th of July is my favorite holiday so I think it would be cool!  I would just hope for it to happen early on the 4th... our house and hospital are right in the heart of DC.  It is a nightmare to get around on the 4th.  We never drive because it is so insane...

  • My 10 year old niece was born on July 4th and hates it.

A few years ago she cried throughout the whole day because so many of her friend's families were out of town with extended family and couldn't attend her party.   She told her mom this year that she wants to have her party a week later so she could hang out with her friends.

I don't want baby to have to share her day.  I want a random July day to be transformed into a "family holiday".  Just like June 2nd and October 14th are  random days to most people, but to us they are special.  They are "our" days.

The only reason I'm not rooting for a July 4th baby is because my OB is on vacation!  I'd rather have her deliver my baby than the other doctor in the practice since I only met her for about 10 seconds.

  • Oh, and BTW, they have to have a staff mix of equal skills & experience. There will always be newbies mixed w/experienced staff. And now there are holiday rotations, so there is no "pulling rank" to get holidays off at a hospital. It's on rotating schedules (ie: one year you get Christmas off, the next year you work it, etc). Hospitals have gone to this to make it more fair to all staff members.
