Witch Names

Just for fun, let's make a list of names that automatically remind you of a witch.

Don't try to come up with a list of every witch in the history of television/movies/books. Only name the ones that when you hear it, you immediately think "witch". Be sure to include the TV show, movie or book in which you heard it!

Also, if you immediately associate a name with a particular witch in pop culture, would that deter you from using it on your own daughter? Does it matter which witch bore the name?

I thought of these, which made me think of creating this thread:

Matilda- the cute little girl witch in the movie, Matilda

Tabitha- Samantha and Darrin's young daughter on "Bewitched"

Esmerelda- the housekeeper witch on "Bewitched" in the last few years of the show

(Yet for some reason, the other witches on the show, Samantha, Endora, and Clara don't make me think of witches at all.)

PS: I hope I don't offend the Bumpie who has a daughter named Matilda with this post. I think it fits her perfectly (and with the perfect nickname, Tillie)!

Interesting! Is this because she was fascinated with the Salem witch trials? Or did she follow the comic, "Sabrina, The Teenage Witch"?

Also, no offense, but are you a man or woman?  Just curious because I would have thought Salem Bryce is a masculine name.

Ah. Tabitha... I guess Bewitched, even though I never watched the Tabitha episodes. Hazel... well, Witch Hazel! Circe is the witch from The Odyssey.

    Ahh, I see.

I never thought of witch hazel! Now this is getting good!

  • Haha I am a woman, and I am not sure why she loves the name so much. But if we ever have a girl we might use Salem as a MN to honor my mom. Her name is Ronda mn is Beth and I dont really care for either of those names.

Technically, she's also the witch from Looney Tunes, but  I didn't know that until long after I'd made the association.

  • Brunhilda & Ethel. I don't know why, but those just seem like goods names for witches.

    Okay, cool.

Hey, if you ever change your mind, you could always do Elizabeth or Elisabeth. It sounds good as a middle name for almost anything. Or if you used it as a first name, there are a TON of different nicknames you could use: Babette, Bess, Betsy, Betty, Bitsy, Buffy, Busy, Elisa, Ella, Elle, Ellie, Elsa, Ilsa, Leeza, Libby, Lisa, Lisette, or Lizzie!

  • Ok - dork moment coming up

Circe - The Odyssey and Dante's Inferno

Sycorax - The Tempest and Caliban Upon Setebos by Browning.

    Embarrassed

  • Sabrina- the teenaged witch

Flora- a good witch from Sleeping Beauty

Millicent- Sleeping Beauty.  The witch's name is Maleficent but it reminds me of it nonetheless.  It's a shame too b/c DH's nana's name is Millicent and goes by Millie and we'd like to honor her.

Prudence, Piper, Phoebe and Paige- from Charmed

Tabitha and Endora from Bewitched, though Samantha does not remind me of a witch.

Hilda is one of the aunts on "Sabrina the Teenage Witch". And "Brun" rhymes with "broom". could that be it? haha.

Also, I'm not sure where you got Ethel, but I agree that Etheldred sounds like a good name for a witch.

  • Morgan- The Mists of Avalon/legend of King Arthur

  • The only ones I can think of are Salem, Sabrina and Tabitha... Also, Matilda wasn't a witch. She had telepathic powers and use her brain :) I've read it 100 times! Haha

Oh, really? I didn't even know it was a book. Is it the same in the movie?

    Interesting.

Is this because you are fascinated with the Salem witch trials?

Or because you like the comic or TV show, "Sabrina, The Teenage Witch"?

Or are you a big "Days of Our Lives" fan?

Or do you have relatives from Salem?

    Or another reason entirely?

  • Some of these have already been mentioned, but here goes:

Sabrina, Zelda, Hilda - Sabrina the Teenage Witch

Piper, Paige, Pheobe, Prudence - Charmed

Elphaba and Glinda (Galinda) - Wicked/The Wizard of Oz

  • Sandra actually does remind me a witch because Sandra Bullock is a witch in Practical Magic. I love that movie, I think her name is Sally in the movie.

Me? If so (or if not), no offense. You know I totally clicked on this post because it was called witch names and I thought Matilda might come up. I loved that book as a kid, so only fond memories for me. The more concerning connections for me are that Matilda means "mighty in battle" and that Saint Matilda is the saint of misbehaving children. My kid fits the bill on the last two perfectly, but no super powers... yet.

  • Yup. It's one of Roald Dahl's most famous books. (He wrote Charlie and The Chocolate Factory and The Witches) She gets her powers from being a genius and accessing part of the brain that no one else uses. In the movie it's the same but they have her do weird stuff with her fingers. In the book, she just looks at stuff to move it...But, yeah, not a witch. No spells or magic. P.S. The book is a little different and about 1,000 better. It's still one of my favorites, and I'm 28! Check it out! You'll love it! Wow. I'm a huge nerd. I should be embarrassed, shouldn't I?

I just might! I still read children's books occasionally. Because I grew up in a private school, I missed a lot of good ones that most kids my age were reading!

Lesley0228, I'm so glad you chimed in! Big Smile
