Hi,
I have a 7 month old, and am currently in search of a new pediatrician. We live on the North Side of Pittsburgh, and have been seeing a group in Bellevue. I'm looking for recommendations for peds that don't follow a "one-size-fits-all" approach - someone who is open to discussion about an alternative vaccination schedule, are thoroughly knowledgeable of EBF, and have a more natural view of health. I'm not coming up with anything via internet search engines (except a holistic doctor in Monroeville, Dr. Khan), so I thought I'd put it out there to real moms (and dads?) in the area.
TIA for any help you can offer!
Re: Holistic(ish) Pediatrician - Pittsburgh
We see Dr. Anthony Kovatch in the North Hills of Pittsburgh. I wouldn't neccessarily consider him a "holistic" doctor, but he has been extremely supportive of BFing and extended BFing. DS actually had latch issues early on and Dr. Kovatch was extremely knowledgeable about BFing and encouraging when the other people were saying that I should give up or supplement with formula. He knew how important it was for me to BF and allowed DS and I the time to get a good latch going and we are still BFing today.
DS is also on an alternative vaccine schedule and Dr. Kovatch has been extremely supportive. He is the perfect balance of conventional and alternative medicine, IMO.
I came on here to recommend Dr. Kovach at Pediatric Alliance Arcadia and saw that someone else already mentioned him! So I'll second their opinion.
I moved here about a year ago, and asked for opinions on pediatricians who would be very pro-breastfeeding, not likely to push antibiotics, and with a laid-back approach. Dr. Kovach was recommended to me and I decided to choose him based on glowing internet reviews.
So far, we've been very pleased. We're extended BFers (DS is 2.5 and still going strong) and he never bats an eye when I say I'm still nursing him. He usually responds with "Great, keep going as long as you can!" He seems very laid back and my son loves him. I can't speak to the alternative vaccine schedule as we vaccinate on a mostly recommended schedule. Hope this helps!
