2nd time Moms: Question!

This might be a dumb question but I really have no idea so I have to ask!

Since it's hot as hell down here in SC I'm just worried about over dressing LO and making him overheat, especially when I put him down to sleep. Is a short sleeve onesie and one of those cotton SwaddleMe things enough or too much? Do I put a hat on him too? I've looked around online and in my "What to expect for the first year" and I'm not really getting a clear answer.

Thanks!: )

  • A good rule of thumb is to dress your newborn with one more layer of clothing than you're wearing. I think your LO will be just fine dressed as you described. I don't think you'll need to put a hat on him unless you're in A/C and are near the vents.

The general rule is you dress your baby the way you dress, with one added layer or blanket.

So-- if you are wearing short sleeves, but the baby in short sleeves with a thin blanket.

My son was born in late April, and it was hot out. He lived in onesies for the first couple months. He never had a hat on in the house. If we left to go somewhere, he still only had a onesie (with shorts or thin pants), but no socks or anything. I also made sure he had a receiving blanket around him when out. He was perfectly fine.

  • I'm planning on just doing onesies with a light swaddle blanket too.  Hats aren't necessary unless you're near the AC vent or you keep your house really cold.

  • I was wondering this too! I sleep naked every night (it is freakin' hot!), so I was wondering if just a short sleeve onsie would be good for LO at night time. However, I also was wanting to swaddle her, but I am afraid a onsie and a swaddle blanket might be too hot. IDK, I guess I'll figure it out when the time comes.

  • DS always just slept in a sleeveless swaddle sack.  Like the Halo with wings (cotton not fleece for the summer).  I never put onesies on him under his sleep sack.  It's too flippin' hot!!

  • I am not an experienced mom, but I received a few muslin recevieving blankets from a friend (who has 2 LOs). She said that they are a great option to wrap up your baby and not make them too hot. I have a couple of the cotton SwaddleMe things that you are referred to too, so between those and a onsie or a gown, I think we will be good to go at night.

  • FTM but we were told by the 2 nurses that taught our birthing class the same as PP one more layer than what you have on.  Also to feel their chest if it is cool add a layer if it is hot and sweaty take off a layer.  And never have the baby directly near the AC or AC vent keep them on the opposite side of the room.  And try to keep the house around 70 degrees.

  • For the first couple of months, our babies are in short sleeve onesies and swaddled in a light receiving blanket if we aren't cuddling with them. We do use light hats if needed the first couple of weeks because this is how you help babies hold there heat in.

depending on the temps of that day, the hat might be overkill.

Keep in mind that a baby is used to 98* temps when in utero...so they're going to want to be warm.

  • I don't swaddle, I think someone posted recently about the change from sids recommendations that if youbdo swaddle to keep their arms.free. anyway my kids slept.in a onesie and a sleeper, no blankets. They were just right.
