people are so freaking ballsy

So Eleanor has a very prominent birthmark-like tumor (hemangioma) on her leg. It's very common and likely to disappear completely over the next few years.

I am constantly amazed by the number of people who come up to us and ask some version of, "What's wrong with her leg?" or "What's that on her leg?"

I mean, I'm not really offended, but I just think it's weird. It would never occur to me in a million years to walk up to someone else and say, "Hey, what's wrong with your kid?" (And these seem like otherwise normal folks.)

And then there's my SIL, who, when I told her it would fade away said, "Thank goodness...I'd hate for her to have that on her leg when she's in a swimsuit when she's older." Indifferent

  • I agree people say the most messed up things sometimes.

I saw a little boy with that pigmentation disorder a couple of weeks ago and he had a white spot on his face, and a white streak through his hair.  He was gorgeous.  But I could see lots of people staring, wondering, wanting to ask.

  • My friend's niece had to wear an eyepatch when she was three for a lazy eye, and the comments she got from kids AND adults were unreal.

  • I agree. People are ballsy. I had a lady come up to me at Target when DS was having a meltdown from being overstimulated and to calm himself he does some self stimming-shaking his head violently back and forth (he has autism) and she asked me if he was "mentally retarded." I could NOT believe it. I wanted to punch her in the face. I replied with a "no, are you?" because I was seriously dumb founded and that was the only thing I could think of at the time. Eeek!

  • My DS has eczema on the backs of his knees and tops of his ankles.  He also used to have a clogged tear duct so he always had gunk in his eye.  People would ask about it too.  I would never do such a thing and find it rude.

  • People are rude. Matt had a clogged tear duct (ended up needing two surgeries for it..a probe, which didn't work, and then a silicone stent placement), and people would constantly ask me if he had pink eye or if he was crying.

One lady in Target was actually arguing with me. She came to me, and said, "Aww, poor little guy has pink eye". I told her that it wasn't pink eye, but it was a blocked tear duct, to which she responses with, "I have three kids. That is pink eye". So, then I got nasty, and asked her what degree she had, because apparently she was smarter than his ENT, pediatrician, and myself (I'm a nurse).

  • Do people filter what they say? I guess I would rather someone ask politely than stare rudely, but still. Come on! Boundaries!!!

  • Carly has a hemangioma on her face. Everyone comments on it. Old people like to ask if I'm having it cut off or tell me their kid had one and it was gone in x number of years. Kids usually ask what's wrong with her face (I say nothing is wrong-it's a birthmark). Last summer we were in NC and people said did she hurt herself-at least the southerners were somewhat polite.

So does Daniel.  My nieces this weekend were saying "what's that on his face??".  But they're kids.  It doesn't bother me with people I know because their concerned/interested.  But I don't know why people in stores ask anyone anything.  I hate Target and it doesn't surprise me when people are rude in there!

  • Ugh, so rude.

K has the same thing, a strawberry birthmark on her back. It's almost completely faded at this point but when she was a little baby it was raised and bright red. I have to admit, I'm glad it was on her back (and thus covered most of the time) so we didn't have to deal with idiotic comments like the ones you're getting.

  • Jude has a small hemangioma on his face and we get the same comments all.the.time.

  • Dylan has one on his arm, though it's flat, it's about the size of a quarter.  I've never had an adult (other than friends) ask what it is, but I have had children ask what it is.  I'm amazed that anyone would come up and ask that.  And your SIL's response...  Good grief.

On a side note, Dylan's is starting to fade, and a friend of mine's daughter had one on her face that was pretty large.  She's 4 now, and it's gone.

  • Gah! I am constantly amazed at the balls people have - and how ignorant they are. I'm with you - it would never in a million years occur to me to ask a stranger what's "wrong" with her kid. When Charlie and Lily were very small I quickly learned that when people asked how old they were, I should just tell them their adjusted age instead of their actual age (for example, say they were two months old instead of 5), because when I didn't the response was almost always, "Oh my goodness! But they're so SMALL! What's WRONG with them!?" Uggg.
