running-- help!

I am newly pregnant with my first. A few months before I got pregnant I started running 3-4 days a week ranging from running 1-3 miles, daily. Now that I am pregnant (only 7 weeks) I asked my doctor and personal trainer their opinion on working out. They stressed that it was clearly important that since I am already active that I continue to work out. BUT said NOT to let my heart rate get over 140. My heart rate can get to 140 just from a fast paced walk! When I told my doctor that she said to stick to walking. I miss my workouts and miss my new habit of running. What are your opinions?? Have you heard different about exercising?

Re: running-- help!

  • Keep running as long as you're comfortable.  Your body will tell you when to slow down (or even stop).  As PP said, if you can converse while running, you're at a good speed.

  • If I kept my heartrate at 140 I'd be walking too.  The information is outdated.  My heartrate is always higher than that when I run, and I run every day.  I've had to increase my water, and my speed has slowed down, but your body is  VERY competent at telling you when you're pushing it.

  • If you have a wearable one, have you ever checked out your zones?  If so, I'd say staying in zone 2 or 3 should be OK since you should be able to talk through it.  I'm with you - my MHR is in the 190's, and a slow jog will stick me in the 170's easy.  I'm glad to hear the feedback that the 140 number is outdated!
  • My doctor said the same about the HR140, however I have pushed it because I can still comfortably talk with a HR160 so I have been jogging and keeping it around 160. I figure, if I can talk and breathe then the baby can breathe. And I like to feel like I am working out, I don't feel like I am working out hard when I'm walking (sorry to all the walkers out there because I do know it is a workout). Good luck! Continue to workout the best you can! And congrats!
