I kept Chelsea in the center until we needed to put Molly's carseat in. Then I moved Chelsea behind the driver's seat and Molly is behind the passenger seat.
I didn't at first, but now he is behind the passenger seat. It's easier with him being bigger, so I don't have to toss him into the center. If I just set him in the car, he won't want to get in the seat... he just wants to play. We do move it to the center if we take a long car ride... it gives me more leg room in the passenger seat w/out squishing his legs. Plus it's easier for me to turn around and entertain him or give him something. If he's right behind my seat, then I have to take off my belt and completely turn around.
You might as well switch him now, since you'll have the infant seat in there soon enough!
We moved it to the side when DD#2 was born, then the baby was in the middle and DD was on the side. It worked perfectly because then I sat in the back next to the baby a lot of times, or I could reach the baby from the front seat (like if I needed to hand her a toy or she was old enough to hold her bottle or a sippy or whatveer).
When we switched him, we already had DD, so he was already on the side. I don't think I could have gotten him into the middle for too long when I was pregnant. We have an SUV so he was no help getting up and into the seat from the ground.
My goal is to keep her in the middle until #2 comes or until I can no longer do it as I get bigger. My mom just asked me this last night bc she was thinking it would be hard on me as I got bigger. But for now, we feel it is safer in the middle, so we will keep her there as long as possible.
