Trying to Get Pregnant

Shaving vs waxing (obv nttgp)

So I generally shave my legs, but its getting ... old. I'm getting lazy in old age, I guess, and I don't to do it every day. I also don't want to pay to have someone else do it for me.

How many of you ladies wax at home? Is it difficult? Is it PAINFUL? I've never waxed and I'm a little freaked out at the pain part.

Is there something else to do that I'm not even thinking of? (I once used Nair .. way back about ... 12 yrs ago? And it sucked.)

Re: Shaving vs waxing (obv nttgp)

  • I had my legs and bikini line waxed at the spa.  WILL NEVER, EVER, EVER DO IT AGAIN. I thought I had a high tolerance for pain, but I guess not for waxing.  It hurt like... the only other pain I've experience in my life would be child birth...  Like really, that bad.  That's just me though.

ETA:  I shave everyday.   I use the Gillete Venus Spa 2-1 Razor and I love it!

  • I used to wax from the knee down at home. It would be impossible for me to do the backs of my legs without making a huge mess, so I didn't even attempt it.  I used a warmer that I bought at Sally Beauty Supply, and used a honee wax.

It worked fine, but just like any kind of waxing, you have to let the hair grow before you can repeat. That is something I didn't want to deal with for the summer, so I went back to shaving every other day.

It does hurt, but that is to be expected.  Exfoliating well before you wax, and the day after will help decrease any in-growns you might get.

My 2 cents- stay far away from nair, but one of my friends really likes Veet, which is a depilatory as well I think.

    GL!

I get them all the time. This first time hurts the worst, it get progressively less painful. The most painful spot is actually where they would leave a landing strip or triangle. I just get rid of everything.

A regular bikini really wouldn't hurt that much at all. But I want it all gone.

  • If I could afford it (or really if I were willing to spend on it) I would get waxed instead of shaving. That being said I think it is SO much more painful to do at home waxing than letting a professional do it.

Yes I second this. I used to get them all the time as well. (I've gotten lazy over the past year...oops.) It's certainly not comfortable and the first time or two are the most painful. After that it's not so bad.  I also agree that the worst part is the would-be landing strip. A regular bikini wax is a piece of cake!  I started with regular bikini waxes then had her do more and more each time until I finally decided to try the Brazilian.  Good luck!

  • well I have gotten laser hair removal on my upper lip, under arms and bikini area and as soon as I am done with all of this Im on to my legs... It is awesome and painless! Well the bikini area hurts a bit more but NOT as much as waxing does. It is the best investment I have ever made. I haven't shaved my under arms in over 4 weeks and I haven't touched my bikini area since my last appt 5 weeks ago. A couple more sessions and I won't have to at all. I HIGHLY recommend it to you ladies!

Have you ever had a just regular bikini?  If not, I would start there.

I get bikini waxes a lot, but never a brazilian.  I have, however, gotten without asking for it an "over--enthusiastic" bikini wax  . . .  And yes, that hurt a lot.  Just a regular bikini isn't bad though.

Taking advil half an hour ahead of time helps (or try tylenol if you're avoiding ibuprofen while TTC).  Also helps to schedule mid-cycle and not around your period.

  • Have you heard of the European wax center? I'm pretty sure they have them all over the states and they use a different kind of wax than your normal hot wax with the strips. The wax goes on and then hardens and they just pull it off. It hurts a bit (obviously they are yanking out your hair!) but I didn't think it hurt as much as the regular wax with strip. Also, for your first visit you get your choice of a free underarm, bikini, or eyebrow wax.

I would love to do laser hair removal!

  • I've tried to wax at home (not fun!), had brazilians from a local place that only does that (painful but worth it), and had laser hair removal (bikini and underarm).

I LOVED my laser hair removal and hope to one day do that for my legs.  If your city has a bunch of daily deal sites like we do in Atlanta you can find a good package for a great price.  They will sell a package of 3-4 sessions for $100-125 but just know you will need at least 6 sessions.  I bought 2 more at a special price on my first visit by my friend plans to do one package at one spa and if she wants more buy another package from a different one to get out cheaper.

  • I get brazillians every month.  It's painful but not intolerable, and if you have a skilled technician they will be done in less than 10 minutes.  I have been to salons in the past where it took 45 minutes or so and that was utter agony.

IMO, and of course your mileage may vary, hard wax that is applied and then just pulled off without a strip is much worse.  I would much rather have larger areas of hair covered and removed instead of a bunch of tiny little areas multiple times.

  • I have tried waxing, using those creams, etc, but my Iranian heritage refuses to slow my hair growth down :-P No matter what I do the hair grows back at the same rate (visible again the next day or two), so I shave since that is the least time-intensive.

Shaving does upset my bikini zone, so I have gotten waxed there, especially before beach trips since it doesn't last too long. I was amazed at how much it DIDN'T hurt. Like..really. A quick..ow!..oh, done. Granted, it wasn't a full Brazillion (which I would think woudl hurt more since the flesh is softer and thus would pull more) but it was really very nothing to me.

That was with my good waxer who was recommended by my mom's hairdresser (in the same salon). One time that girl got held up in traffic, so someone else did it. Ow! Hurt more! Still not bad, totally doable, but definitely a painful experience rather than a nothing experience.

So my advice is ask your friends and find someone who is good!

  • Also, ever seen this e-mail forward? Makes me laugh out loud every time!

All hair removal methods have tricked us with their promises of easy, painless removal. The epilady, scissors, razors, Nair and now.... The Wax!!

My night began as any other normal weekday night. Come home; fix dinner; played with the kids. I then had the thought that would ring painfully in my mind for the next few hours; "Maybe I should pull the wax out of the medicine cabinet?"

So I headed to the site of my demise; the bathroom. It was one of those cold wax kits. No melting a clump of hot wax, you just rub the strips together in your hand and then they get warm and you peel them apart, press it to your leg (or wherever else) and hair comes right off!

No muss, no fuss. How hard can it be? I mean, I'm no girly, girl, but I am mechanically inclined enough that I can figure it out.

So I pull one of the thin strips out. It's two strips facing each other, stuck together. Instead of rubbing them together, I get out the hair dryer and heat it to 1000 degrees. Cold wax my rear end. I lay the strip across my thigh. Hold the skin around it tight and pull.

OK... So it wasn't the best feeling, but it wasn't too bad. I can do this!!! Hair removal no longer eludes me!! I am She-Ra, fighter of all wayward body hair and smooth skin extraordinaire!!

With my next wax strip, I move "north". After checking on the kids, I sneak back into the bathroom for the ultimate hair fighting championship. I drop my panties and place one foot on the toilet. Using the same procedure, I apply the wax strip across the right side of the bikini line, covering the right half of my vagina and stretching down to the inside of my butt cheek (Yes, it was a long strip). I inhale deeply and brace myself.... RRRRIIIIIIPPPPPPPP!!!!!!!!

I'm Blind!!!!! Blinded from pain!!!!!!... OH MY GOD!!!!!!!!!!!

Vision returning, I notice that I've only managed to pull off half of the strip. S**T!! Another deep breath and RRIIPP... Everything is swirly and spotted. Do I hear crashing drums????? OK, back to normal. I want to see my trophy - A wax covered strip with my hairy pelt that has caused me so much pain, sticking to it. I want to revel in the glory that is my triumph over body hair. I hold up the strip! There's no hair on it!

Where is the hair?? WHERE IS THE WAX? Slowly I ease my head down, foot still perched on the toilet. I see the hair... The hair that should be on the strip. I touch. I am touching wax. S**T!!! I run my fingers over the most sensitive part of my body, which is now covered in cold wax and matted hair.

Then I make the next BIG mistake . . . . . . . Remember, my foot is still propped up on the toilet. I know I need to do something, so I put my foot down. DAMN!!! I hear the slamming of the cell door.

Vagina? Sealed shut! Butt?? Sealed shut!!! I penguin walk around the bathroom, trying to figure out what to do and think to myself, "Please don't let me get the urge to poop. My head may pop off."

Hot water!! Hot water melts wax!! I'll run the hottest water I can stand into the bathtub, get in, immerse the wax covered bits and the wax should melt and I can gently wipe it off, right??

I get in the tub - The water is slightly hotter than that used to torture prisoners of war or sterilize surgical equipment - I sit. Now, the only thing worse that having your nether businesses glued together is having them glued together and then glued to the bottom of the tub. In scalding hot water!! Which, by the way, doesn't melt cold wax. So, now I'm stuck to the bottom of the tub!!! God bless the man what convinced me I should have a phone in the bathroom!!! I call my friend, thinking surely she's waxed before and has some secret of how to get me undone. It's a very good conversation starter, "So my butt and who-ha are stuck to the bottom of the tub!" There is a slight pause. She doesn't have a secret trick, but does try to hide the laughter from me. She wants to know exactly where the wax is located on bottom, "Are we talking cheeks or hole or what?"

She's laughing out loud by now... I can hear her. I give her the rundown and she suggests I call the number on the side of the box. YEAH!!! Right!!!!!! I would be the joke of someone else's night. While we go through various solutions, I resort to scraping the wax off with a razor. Nothing feels better then to have your girlie goodies covered in hot wax, glued shut, stuck to the tub in super hot water, and then dry shaving the sticky wax off!!!

By now, the brain is not working, dignity has taken a major hike and I slip into glazed donut land. My friend is still talking with me as my hand reaches towards the saving grace... The lotion they give you to remove the excess wax. What do I really have to lose at this point. I rub some on and OH MY GOD!!!!! The scream probably woke the kids, scared the dickens out of my friend, but I really don't care!!

"IT WORKS!! IT WORKS!!" I get a hearty congratulation from my friend and she hangs up. I successfully remove the remainder of the wax and then notice, to my grief and despair... THE HAIR IS STILL THERE... ALL OF IT!!!!!!!!!!!

So, I shaved it off. Heck, I'm numb at this point.

    Next week I'm going to try hair color . . . . . .
