Pregnant after a Loss

My hips are keeping me awake

I am not sleeping well at all. I try to sleep on my left side. I have always been a side sleeper or stomach sleeper. But I wake up at least ten times through the night because my hip is killing me. I either switch to the right for a few minutes or have to get up and walk around to make it stop hurting. I am so tired by the end of the day because I never get a good night's sleep. I have a boppy pregnancy pillow, but it isn't helping. I also bought one of those egg crate things to put over the mattress. But it isn't helping either. Did anyone find anything that helps hip pain?

Re: My hips are keeping me awake

  • Ice helps.  I ice my hip (usually just the left one as that one hurts the most) at night before bed.  It helps to drop the inflammation down enough to let me sleep.  I also tuck a pillow between my legs and under my belly when I lay on my left side (that's the side I tend to go to sleep on).  I then roll into the pillow, so I'm actually sleeping half over the pillow.  That helps to take the pressure off of my hip.  When it hurts really bad, I take Tylenol and try to sleep more on my back than on my hip.  I put a pillow behind me and roll onto it, so I'm not totally flat.  I hope that helps!

  • I was having the same problem and tried all the pillow tricks out there and nothing worked...So I have resorted to sleeping in the recliner in the living room - it is far more comfortable on my hips and I actually get to sleep...

I have found that I start on my left side, hip hurts/time to pee, switch to the right side, hip hurts/time to pee, switch to the left side... repeat several times during the night.

I have also found that it takes a lot of the bed and MANY pillows to make me sleep well.  Poor DH.  I think that he is ready for LO just to have his part of the bed back.

One good thing (atleast this happened to me), but the hip pain seemed to come and go.  I guess this was due to my changing body.  So I might have a month of pain, than I would get 3 weeks break.  Hope you get a break soon.

  • Sounds weird, but prenatal pilates! I had horrible hip pain last time, and it went away in a day after I started doing pilates. I think it has to do with the stretching of muscles. Sorry you're not sleeping well :(

  • My hip pain will come and go- it will be bad for a couple nights in a row then I'll get a night off. I sleep with a regular pillow in between my knees which sometimes helps. I also think that any sort of stretching/exercise also helps me out.

Ditto on this and as a yoga instructor, check out prenatal yoga and in specific Pigeon Pose and Thread the needle. You can also do a standing variation of thread the needle which I find easier to maneuver with the belly, but stand between two areas that you can hold onto.

  • Same problem here, and it has been going on for months. Nothing except sleeping in the recliner helps. It's awful.

  • I've been struggling with this for the past 3 weeks too.  I posted on my BMB yesterday and got some interesting responces HERE.

I do go to the chiropractor once a month, yoga once a week, and I'm working on finding a good position for a pillow between my legs. I thought the commet on wearing good, supportive shoes was interesting since I've been wearing lots of flats lately.  Hope you find some relief!

  • I have been having the same problem, I didn't think this should be starting so soon because I haven't really gotten much of a belly.  I can't imagine how bad they're going to hurt in a few months. I really haven't had much luck with anything either, and have been considering purchasing a pregnancy pillow.  GL.

  • Thank you for the suggestions.  I will give some a try.  I just watched the video for the pigeon pose.  I don't think I can do that!  I am not that flexible at all.  Is it okay to start yoga during pregnancy if you have never done it?
