Babies: 3 - 6 Months

4 1/2 months and not rolling yet

I know each baby is different, but DS is 19 weeks today and still hasn't rolled over.  He does roll to his side and sleeps like that most nights now, so that's progress.  I try to help him out with tummy time or give him a little nudge, and he won't have any of it.  He prefers to be on his back...I think he's just lazy! :)  Should I be worried or doing anythign differently to help him along?  I'm not that concerned about it, but I keep getting emails from The Bump and BabyCenter saying it should have happened by now! :)

  • Usually they roll from tummy to back first and earlier (around 4-5 months) then back to front. I wouldn't worry abotu it yet.

  • Don't worry it will happen..DS2 just started rolling tummy to back a couple weeks ago and gets about half way over with back to tummy but hasn't figured it out yet....DS1 didn't rollover until he was close to 7 months old and would only do it when he was sleeping...but he was a bigger baby and had a big head

  • DD#1 didn't roll until after she was 5 months old.  She tried when she was 3 months, but gave up and didn't really try again until a little after 5 months.  I wouldn't worry about it.
  • Since he's not even five months yet, he should be alright.  My little lady is just now starting to roll from back to tummy (she does it from tummy to back, but even so, she does NOT like tummy time).  Maybe by six months would be worrisome, but otherwise all is likely well.

  • I just read on a baby site this week (can't remember where), but that most babies these days aren't rolling over until 5 months, since they are spending less time on the belly (due to the sleeping on back campaign).  I guess babies used to roll over much earlier when they slept on their stomachs.  Don't worry - it will happen!
  • DD did not roll over from front to back until about 5 1/2 months and still doesn't do it consistently. still working on the back to front.

  • Wow, you ladies are making me feel waaaaay better! I was getting concerned since ds is 17 weeks today and still not rolling over. He did it once by accident because his pillow was lopsided. lol    Like PP I try to help him but he seems super content to just lay there.
  • DS1 didn't roll until 6 months and was totally fine  :)
