Membrane Stripping question...

I will be seeing my doc on Friday and she has offered to do a membrane sweep at 39 weeks? depending on how I feel and how I am progressing. So far there has not been much progress (no dilation). So a little background on my situation? From what my doc and I have talked about if I am not in labor by 40 weeks I will need another ultra sound and if my baby is still measuring on the small side she will induce me.

I have been contracting on and off for the past two weeks, but like I said no progress just pain.

In reading about membrane sweeps there is no guarantee that the membrane sweep will help put me into labor (esp if I am not at that "thresh hold"), but it could send me home with a fun weekend full of contractions.

Granted on friday we are going to have some discussion before anything happens but here are my questions:

I realize that everyone is different but if you have had the procedure done does it hurt (for me just the cervical checks alone hurt ALOT) and did it do much to help you go into labor?

I had mine stripped with my first around 39 weeks. It was uncomfortable for me...not the worst feeling, just a bit painful. I ended up with no contractions and no labor. In fact, I ended up being induced at 41 weeks and 4 days. So, no real advice just my experience with it!

I had mine done today at 3 , it wasnt too bad i am only 1cm and 60%. I havent went into labor yet. After i even went and walked the whole mall by the time i came home i had a little bit of spotting but no contractions or anything .... So im not sure if it will work or not my dr said to allow 48 hours to find out. If you think the cervical checks hurt ALOT then having it done will probley hurt you really bad because it felt like that but a little worse for me. hope i helped :) good luck!!

I had it done with my son twice and yes it hurt. The first time was a few days before my due date and all it did was give me some cramping for the rest of the day. The second time I was 5 days overdue and again caused cramping and some spotting. That was in the afternoon on a Thursday, I went into labour at midnight the next night (Friday) and my son was born late in the afternoon on Saturday at exactly 7 days overdue. I'm not sure if being that overdue or the sweep caused labour. I say if you have the chance to have it done and possibly avoid having to be induced I'd do it. That's just me though.

Thank you for the input ladies... I guess we'll see what the Doc says tommorow and we will discuss my options.

I had it done twice with DS and just last weeks with DS # 2, I plan to have it done again on Friday if I don't go into labor (as per my OB).

I don't find it painful, just uncomfortable.  It's only got a 50% chance of working I think, the 3 times I've had it done, not immediate labor started.  I was induced with DS #1.

I've been dilated a bit and effaced all times it was done.
