Trying to Get Pregnant

S/O spotting before period

(on iphone - sorry!) So I've noticed that some people have been talking about talking B6 (I think) because they spot for a couple of days before their period. I sometimes spot 2 days before my period. Never realized this was "bad". What is it supposed to indicate exactly?? I thought maybe LPD, but I'm on 12DPO so I think I'm ok in that regard (right??!). Just checking in case this cycle is a BFN. Hoping today was just minor fluctuation! Thanks in advance!!

Re: S/O spotting before period

  • ummmmm ya....I don't think you've been reading the posts right.  Most women on here take B6 because their LP is short not because they spot before their period Confused

  • Spotting before your period can be completely normal. Spotting excessively (for SEVERAL days) can be abnormal. The reason many women here try B6 is to lengthen their LP's, not solely because of spotting. They feel their LP's are shortened by their spotting. If you're making it to 12DPO with no spotting, then you're probably fine. And make sure you talk to your dr before starting any new medication for TTC.

  • Consistent spotting for several days before AF *can* (not always) indicate that the progesterone levels aren't high enough to maintain the endometrial lining and thus, it's breaking down too soon.  That *could* (again, not always) cause problems maintaining a pregnancy.  However, some women are just chronic spotters.

  • It's normal for healthy periods to have an ascending-descending pattern (as in light flow/spotting, then moderate flow, then heavy, then moderate, then light etc). So a day or two of spotting before your heavier flow can be perfectly fine.

As pp's have said, excessive spotting (3+ days) could be a sign of something like a hormonal imbalance. Also a short LP phase could be a sign of an issue too. Brown spotting is another possible sign of an issue.

Like others have suggested, I'd talk to your doctor first if you notice something about your chart that worries you!

Thanks! That's what I was wondering - how spotting related to LPD. I just wanted to make sure there wasn't something else that I was missing re: spotting.

  • Thanks for the responses ladies. I wasn't intending on taking medication without dr approval. It had just never occurred to me that my spotting might be abnormal. Have a good day!!
