Trying to Get Pregnant

Sorry to add to temping questions...

If we weren't successful this cycle I was thinking about charting next cycle, but from what I've read about temping it seems to be pretty sensitive.  My husband gets up at 4 for work, and sometimes I sort of hear him, sometimes I fully wake up and it takes a few minutes to get back to sleep, and sometimes I completely sleep through his alarm and him getting ready.  I get up at 6 and would ideally like to take my temp then.  Will the fact that my sleep isn't consistent from 4-6 affect my temp?

  • Yes.

You should set an alarm for 4 and temp then. It only takes a few minutes and you can go back to sleep.

Once you start temping you may find that if you were to wake up at 4, knowing you had to temp in 2 hours, you would have more trouble falling back to sleep. That, and you should have 3 hours sleep before you temp.

  • Thanks!  I was thinking that was probably what I should do if my stirring was a problem.  I appreciate the input!

  • I am a very light sleeper, and I tend to start waking up a little bit around 5am every day, though I don't get out of bed until 7.  My DH also often sets his alarm for 5am, and then I sleep lightly while he is getting showered, dressed, etc., and then tells me goodbye around 6.  I had previously been concerned that this light sleeping for a couple hours before temping might affect my BBT accuracy.  A couple of times, I have taken my BBT the very first time I woke up at 5, slept lightly a little more, then taken it at its normal time at 7.  It honestly has never changed by more than .1 or .2 degrees.  So I figure, that if this is the normal pattern for ME, then I should still be able to discern my O pattern because there should still be a shift, does that make sense?  Its my understanding that it is the pattern of temps overall that should help you spot your O date.  I could be wrong about this, though, and my thermometer might also be a little crazy (see my most recent post).  HTH!

    Agreed. Yes

Hmm, I feel like that's an interesting point.  The whole charting thing confuses me, which is why I haven't done it yet.  That and I worry I'll obsess 10 times more than I already do.  I did the CBEFM this month and to get up, POAS, read it, and move on with my day I feel is good for me.  I'm scared if I start charting I'll just sit and stare and analyze all the time and possibly be more stressed than I already am.  I think I'll try getting up at 4am for one month and see what happens... Fingers still crossed that I won't need to worry about it though... I'm testing Tuesday or Wednesday...

  • Yes, GL that you won't need to worry about any of this!  Again, I don't know if my ideas are correct or not but they seem to work for me.  I remember reading in TCOYF that some people are REALLY sensitive to factors that might affect their temperature (poor sleep, temping at different times, moving around while sleeping, drinking, etc) but I honestly haven't seen anything really affect my temp that much.  I move a lot during the night, and even the one night this cycle that I had a few too many drinks and temped an hour and a half late, my temp wasn't all THAT bizarre looking.  Maybe I am not one of those sensitive people.  If you need to temp, maybe you could do the same experiment and see if it really affects your pattern.  Again, GL!

This exactly.  I rarely get 3 hours of sleep before I temp, but my temps are very normal, so I know that it is the right pattern for ME.  You just have to see what works for you - and after temping for a couple of months you will know how things like poor sleep, alcohol, etc. effect your temperature.
