Trouble TTC

XP: No longer unexplained IF

So I met with my RE today to review the results of my lap (performed by my OB) and surgery pics. What was surprising was that he said I have Stage 2-3 endo! My OB had stated that I only little spots of endo and wouldn't even categorize me as having it. WTF?So today's revelation was alarming to say the least. I'm really glad I pushed for doing the lap because it provided many answers to my IF. Wanted to share in case anyone is on the fence about having a lap. I was completely asymptomatic so I'm pretty shocked.

  • I'm sorry about your dx but glad you finally have one (if that makes sense?). Good luck with everything!

  • I'm sorry about the news, but it must be a slight relief to finally have answers.

When I had my lap over a year ago my obgyn told me I had stage 1 endo too.  I wouldn't be surprised if after all of the fertility meds it's grown.

Was your RE able to remove most of it?  Did your obgyn do a previous lap?

I have mixed feelings about it. On one hand I'm glad to have some answers but on the other hand, I feel so broken. Anyway, I only had this one lap done. My OB had to perform it rather than my RE due to my insurance coverage. It really surprises me how my OB thought I had very mild endo when my RE says I have lots. That's crazy to me.

  • I am sorry about the endo but I hope the new dx gives you some peace of mind. I have been on the fence about having a lap myself and will probably do it if I amass a couple of IVF failures. I hope that having it removed will be your lucky ticket to future success!

  • wow, i bet its nice to have a diagnosis, im also unexplained and it can be very aggrivating. I was wondering what made them perform the LAP?

  • I am sorry about your diagnosis but I am really glad you posted this. I was iffy about the lap but my RE said that he would like that to be my next step if this IUI failed (#3). I do not have any symptoms of endo either, but I would much rather have the surgery than go on with treatment and not know if something else was wrong.

Good luck! And thank you again!

  • I know that it sucks to find out you have endo but at least now you know the culprit!  I was exactly like you in May ended up with Stage 2 endo, no symptoms but so glad I had it done.

I guess it just goes to show everyone that the OB and RE truly have different specialities!  Good for you for working with a RE, otherwise you'd be banging your head against the wall months down the road if you only relied on your OB!

    What's the plan going forward?

I pushed to have a lap done because I had an ectopic with my 1st IVF and didn't want to cycle again until we could determine if the tube was damaged. I wanted the tube fixed or removed prior to proceeding in hopes of avoiding another ectopic (my chances for a repeat ectopic with a damaged tube are 4 fold or something crazy like that).

I would totally do it. You're not guaranteed to get answers from it and they may find nothing but it will at least give you some peace of mind. I would have done an exploratory lap prior to proceeding to IVF if my insurance would have fully covered it (prior to the ectopic, it would have been billed under IF vs. Possible damage due to ectopic PG). I'm actually really upset that my OB misdiagnosed me. That means she didn't zap all the endo she could've while she was performing the surgery :(. Of course I wanted my RE to do the surgery but due to insurance covering the OB vs the RE, I would've had to pay $20k or so vs. $0. So I had to go with my OB. So frustrating. Anyway they both stated that my ute looked good so we are moving forward with plans to start FET in mid July after AF comes.

I would be pissed too.  Ugh, I hate insurance.  GL with your FET in July!

  • I'm so sorry about your dx, but glad you have answers. I had a pretty similar experience, with no/few symptoms and a dx of stage 3 endo and cysts. I hope you and your RE can come up with a great plan!
