Food Allergy

Newbie lurker...food allergy question

Hi everyone, I've been lurking on here the past few days. My five-month-old has not been diagnosed with any allergies yet, but her surgeon put an allergy alert tag on her after her surgery last week for the strong potential for latex allergy given her prematurity, early and frequent medical interventions and a family history of allergies. I did a little reading and found that latex allergy is also associated with allergy to several types of fruits, including apples, bananas, etc. My question is this: given that DD is at a strong risk of latex allergies (and I guess therefore allergies to those related fruits), do I need to do anything different in introducing those foods to her? Delay them? Anything special? The surgeon is not an allergist, and didn't really tell me anything other than putting an allergy alert tag on her.

  • Hmmm I don't know.  If I were you, I'd get hooked up with an allergist.  That said, I have a pretty severe laytex allergy and I have no issues with any fruits...I've never even heard of it.  Hopefully that will be the case for your LO as well.

  • I would not limit her from those fruits just based on an undiagnosed latex allergy.

I am allergic to almost all of the fruits on the list of things related to latex (mango, banana, avocado, melons, and SO many more) and I am not allergic to latex. I do watch carefully, and try to limit my latex exposure just in case it develops, but just because you have one doesn't mean you will necessarilly have the other.

I hope for her sake, that she doesn't have ANY allergies! :) Definitely talk to an allergist and have her tested if you are concerned though.

  • My DH's distant cousin has a latex allergy and he wears special gloves all the time - but no fruit allergy.

I would keep benadryl in the house before you introduce anything.

My allergist told me that ppl with fruit allergies tend to be an oral allergy and can be taken care of with benadryl (that doesn't mean all)..

I wouildn't delay (in my unprofessional opinion).. i would just keep an eye out for any reactions and keep her on the same fruit for a few extra days before introducing a new one.

  • My daughter's allergist told us that she would likely be allergic to kiwi and latex because she has an allergy to bananas.  It turned out that she is negative to both kiwi and latex.

I agree with PP to keep benadryl in the house when introducing.

  • Thanks ladies, that was what I had been thinking as far as just keeping Benadryl on hand in case and waiting a few extra days in between new fruits. Just wanted to reaffirm that! Smile
