Is the bump a secret lifestyle for you?

I haven't told anyone I know about this site. The only person who knows that I am a member of this site is my husband. I am sorry but I cannot come out of the closet openly & admit that I am a member of this board. My IRL friends would think I am crazy or something. They wouldn't understand the value in this board. I value the relationship I have on this board, but I am afraid to tell my IRL friends about it when I really really want to. I feel like I am a member of a cool social site, but I am afraid that once I do come out I will get laughed at.So how many IRL friends know about this site & what was their reaction when you first told them about it?

  • I'm also secret about it...but when I started meeting people IRL from it, I had to become more open to my husband and family about it. haha, sounds like such a dirty little secret!  I still don't think anyone knows the extent to which I am on, though.

  • Eh I talk about it to everybody!! I even indrotuced Mands629 to my mamma :) I value the friendships sooo much that I have made here that I tell every pregnant woman I meet so hopefully she gets what I have gotten out of here too.

  • I tell pregnant friends about it hoping they'll get as much out of it as I have. I've met several bumpies IRL and keep in touch with a lot of people off the board. I don't care if IRL friends and relatives think I'm crazy. In this day and age, it shouldn't be weird to meet people on the internet.

  • I'm a closet bumpie.  I don't hide it but I don't go bragging about it.  my close friends and family know you all as "those girls from that message board I go to" lol

  • I'm also pretty secretive about it.  Not like it's a "secret" secret or anything, it's just that very few people I know wouldn't think it was weird.

I have suggested the site to a few pregnant friends/ family members but I'm sure that no one realizes how much I am on here.
  • I told one IRL friend because she met her husband via internet dating, so I knew she'd "get it".  She also was a member of a similar website when she was pregnant.  My hubby knows of course.  And I told my cousin about The Bump because she is expecting her first child and I thought she might enjoy it.

  • No way.  I've been such a BBS nerd for so long that no one would be surprised to know I am on here.  My family and friends all know about 'The Bump Girls'
I used to be a big deal.  Now I'm just old.
  • Definitely not. I've been a member of various forums since 2001 and some of my closest friends come from a huge forum that I've been a member of for 9 years. I really don't care if people judge when I answer their question of, "How do you know each other?" with "we met online!"

  • Not a secret, but I typically don't tell people what website I go to.  I just say, "I heard on the message boards that I go to that __________."  DH knows about it and sometimes tells me to get on here and ask you ladies about things (especially sleep lol).

  • I don't go broadcasting it, but I don't hide it either. I was a knottie back in the day and some of the girls I met there came to my wedding and we have gtgs. I'm still on a board with many of those women, they've stayed at my house, had lunch at my parents' house, we meet up around the country when one of us is traveling for business, etc.

  • It was definitely a secret when I was on TTGP, but once I got pregnant the secret was out! My H loves that I'm part of it, and my family has grown to understand how helpful it has been (especially after they see all the coupons/checks I've scored or the baby products I never would have known about if it weren't for TB). Plus, they've begun to understand that the friendships on here are real (like when they see jillybean's little Alex's picture on my fridge or the blanket my BFPB sent me after M was born).

DH never wants me to leave TB! He's always asking, "Well, what do the girls on the bump say about...?" He wishes he were part of an online community!

ETA: Seriously, though, this board has been more helpful to me than anything "IRL" - more than the pedi, other moms, my own mom, etc. How could I raise my baby without you guys? Haha...

  • Other than to my husband, I always refer to stuff I've learned here as stuff "my friend" told me about (for the total homebody I am, I sure have a lot of "friends", haha).  DH knows you guys as "the December Mamas".  My sister knows I'm on TB, but not that I'm a regular messageboard poster.  She's only familiar with TB through TK, so she assumes girls on TB are the same BSC wedding planning girls from TK, just with babies now (and when you see the drama start up on other boards, she's right, lol).  I don't feel like it's weird to be on a message board or have online friends, I just don't tell people because I like TB to be "my" thing.

  • No, I'm open about it. Back in 2005 when I joined the knot, I was embarrassed about it and didn't want people to know I had online friends. I don't feel like there's any stigma to it anymore though.

  • ive only told DH about the site and he obviously knows how much i go on it.

i wouldnt tell anyone IRL about it cause i think im very open about stuff here that i wouldnt necessarily tell people IRL.  of course this is the internet and anyone could find this but i wouldnt openly get people to come here.

  • I talk about the things I learn and hear from you gals all the time, to DH, friends, family, co-workers, etc.  You are "the girls on that message board I go to".  Nobody really asks where, specifically, the group exists online, but if they did, I would tell them.

  • I've been on the boards since I got engaged, so pretty much all the people I am close to, know I have "online friends", that I "belong to a message board", etc. Those are the terms I usually use- no need to bother being too specific.

I am also to blame for my sister's nest addiction, lol.

  • It's a secret for me! My husband knows that I have posted a few key questions here but does not know that I visit regularly. He is not into using the internet for stuff like getting health/parenting information. But for me it was a big help during pregnancy and beyond. I in fact was able to self-diagnose something that my doctors were too stupid to figure out because I had the help of thebump. (Symphysis pubis dysfunction, and yes, the doctors later agreed with me on it...they just couldn't identify it themselves based on the symptoms before I brought it up to them.)

I would also get laughed at for being on this site. I feel you.
