***MMT*** re: sleep & traveling

I just got back from vacation and have been scanning through the boards trying to catch up (where's Rssn to give a recap when you need her?!?). I saw your post on sleep and it hit a chord.

The entire time we were gone on our cruise, DD slept absolutely awful. She was up every 2-3 hours all.night.long. We were exhausted and it was hard to enjoy vacation because of it. I pretty much nursed her on and off all night the entire time we were gone. Since we've been back I've resorted to letting her CIO. She's always been a craptastic night sleeper and we ended up doing Ferber at 9 months. Tonight will be the 4th night we've been home and she's still waking up at night.

I was wondering if you've had any sleep success since you've completed all your travels and, if so, what, if anything, you did to help your DD get back on track. TIA!!

Re: ***MMT*** re: sleep & traveling

  • The weeks after coming home from vacation were super crazy around our place and we couldn't really establish a routine so it just got worse and worse.  Last week we finally decided to bite the bullet and get her back on track.  We started out letting her CIO and I would go in and check on her using intervals (3,5,7,10 minutes) but her crying would just escalate each time I opened the door.  So we sucked it up and let her cry.  And cry.  And CRY.  It was absolutely heartbreaking.

The first night she cried for 90 minutes (!!) before she stopped crying.  She stood in her crib for another 20-30 minutes before laying down and she didn't fall asleep for another 30-45.  The next night she cried for maybe 15 minutes and the third night she cried for barely 5.  The 4th night she didn't cry at all.  Granted, she was still spending a relatively substantial amount of time awake in her crib before falling asleep but she had done that prior to vacation so I wasn't too concerned with it.

We still used the "whatever it takes" approach at nap time and waited until maybe the 3rd day to start letting her CIO.  I think waiting until she "got it" at bedtime helped her understand that the same thing was happening at night time.

I'll be honest - I don't know if I could have done this a year ago.  I think the fact that she's 2 and *really* understands us when we say, "Audrey, it's time to go night night" made me more okay with letting her CIO as opposed to my attitudes about it when she was younger.

    Good luck!
