Trying to Get Pregnant

Intro & Question

Hi there,

I've been reading posts for awhile (and I did read the new-person info).  I apologize for the lack of personalization here - hopefully I can figure out how to add pictures soon.

I'll tell you a bit about myself then I have a quick question.  I'm a clinical social worker/therapist.  I've been married since January 2009 and with my husband for 7 years.  We went off birth control in April 2011 and have been trying since then.

I'm not sure if anybody can help with my question, but I figured it's worth a try.  Unlike I've read in other posts, I have been having remarkably short cycles.  since going off birth control, I have had one 28 day cycle followed by two 20day cycles.  I realize that 2 cycles isn't really a pattern but I am an anxious person and don't like not being in control!  I know I'm lucky not to have to wait so long to find out if I'm pregnant, but do short cycles indicate that ovulation won't occur?  Is it something I should be concenred about?

Thanks!

Re: Intro & Question

  • 28 days isn't a short cycle and yes you can O with a short cycle.  I would suggest you start charting with Fertility Friend so you get a much better picture as to what is going on.

My cycles are usually 28 days and have been since I came off BC Aug 2010.  Honestly, I wouldn't be that concerned with your 20 day cycle being as you just came off of BC in April.  It can take a while for your body to regulate, so I wouldn't assume that your cycles would stay they way they have been these last 2 cycles necessarily.

I agree with KDG that it would be a good idea for you to chart...at that point you would be able to determine if you simply have a short cycle and/or if you have a short LP.  Short cycle with a normal LP shouldn't be a problem, short cycle with a short LP might be. (Gurus correct me if I'm wrong please!)  The tutorials on FF will be helpful for you too.

  • Thanks for the feedback.  I realize the 28 day cycle wasn't short, but was more concerned about the most recent two.  I did sign up for FF but havent started temping yet.  I guess I need to do that - just not much of a morning person and I can see myself forgetting a lot.

     Thanks again!

I am the same and when I charted with DD I just kept an alarm clock by my bed and my thermometer right next to it. After a few days it became habit. Once you start temping you will get a much better idea of your cycle. Good luck!

  • Definitely start charting, it will bring you a lot more peace of mind than wondering what is going on. I totally understand about difficulty charting (I currently have to temp at 4:30am and go back to sleep since my toddler keeps waking up crazy early). But once you get started, you'll get in the habit pretty quickly. It is very satisfying seeing what your body is doing on the chart. I had a 20 day cycle post-Mirena that freaked me out. Since I was charting I know that while that cycle was annovulatory, my next (28 day) cycle was positive for ovulation. It's only because of charting that I know that information, and I like feeling in control of that knowledge.
