Lower Lip Sucking

Kailani started sucking her lower lip when she was 6 months old. She won't stop and its espcially worse at night. She never sucked her thunb and refused a pacifier very early on. I'm concerned that it will affect the alignment of her teeth and don't know how to get her to stop. I talked to her pedi about it but her doesn't seemed too concerned. Any ideas of how to get her to stop?

Re: Lower Lip Sucking

  • E has started to do something similar. I am interested in what others have to say Smile

  • Oh Brooke used to do this!! I didn't even stop to think about the alignment of her teeth and it went away on its own :)
  • Lori!! Brooke is so big now and adorable. So good to hear that it went away by itself. So you know how long she did it for?

You can see she's doing it in my siggy pic.

Bella sucks her tongue, it sounds odd but its true. It's comforting to her. She's been doing it since she was tiny (she refused a paci too) and she still does it. The pedi dentist said it wasn't an issue but I'm not sure about your LO sucking her lip. These days most kids need braces so I'm banking that eventually B will need them.
  • i noticed that E started sucking his lower lip around 5+ months too, and he did it more and more when his bottom teeth were coming in.  now that they're both through, he doesn't do it as much anymore.

that doesn't help explain kailani's lip sucking, but maybe that's what's going on for johndrea's e?

  • My E does this sometimes too! I think it's cute lol. She doesn't do it too much so I am not worried (just yet).

Thank you so much! It was only a few months, some of our friends say that it's because their gums are itchy while they're teething. I'm not sure if that's true, but I was just glad that she had something to soothe herself. (Like Kailani, she never took to a pacifier, even for naps or bedtime and was not a thumb sucker or a blanket/lovey kind of girl)

If your pediatrician is not worried, I wouldn't worry either. However, if you ARE, then you could call a pediatric dentist and check it out, or just ask over the phone :)
