Girl Potty Training Tips??

Any tips or advise for potty training? Did you use any type of reward system? We're going to be starting soon. Have any of you followed the 3 Day Potty Training method? Did it work?

Re: Girl Potty Training Tips??

  • My biggest advice is don't push it unless she is TRULY ready. We tried to start with Chelsea around 23 mos and she just wasn't there yet. So we let it go and didn't try again until she was almost 2 and 1/2. This time she was very excited about it and she was pt'd within 2 to 3 weeks (pee and poop). We used a sticker chart. At first she got a sticker every time she went. Then she got one if she didn't have an accident in the a.m., and another sticker for no p.m. accidents. (By this I mean pre-nap/after nap until bed.) It worked really well. I was able to tailor the sticker rewards to her progress each week.

I SAH so I didn't use the 3 Day method. My mom was here for the beginning of it b/c Molly had just been born. So we just let Chelsea run around with no diaper on and kept asking her if she had to go every 1/2 hour or so. If she had an accident, we cleaned it up with no reaction. Within a couple days she went from maybe 3 or 4 accidents to none on most days. Although then she started pooping on the floor! So we put undies on her then. One accident in her underwear and she was done with that! She did NOT like that feeling.

Don't get me wrong, almost a year later she still has an occasional accident. Like if we are outside playing or if she is really focused on an activity and she forgets to pay attention to the feeling. But I would say within a month of starting she was at the point of only an occasional accident. And she was in underwear in bed by that point also. She has peed in bed I think three times in the past year. All our fault for giving her too much to drink before bed.

Good luck! It's definitely an adventure! lol

  • PTing is different for every kid.  You have to try to figure out what will work for her, and when she is ready.  Ty was NOT ready by his second birthday, despite all my efforts, he didn't once use the potty until he was 2 1/2 and was going to preschool.  I told him the other kids would be using the potty and he should really try, suddenly he was almost PTed overnight.  But he needed a little extra motivation, so we used a potty treat bowl.  Bri, on the other hand, has been using the potty since at least 18M.  But I wouldn't say she is potty trained, she will use a diaper if she has one on, and I usually have one on her.  I am about to take it to the next step, I was just waiting for her 2nd birthday, but she proved to me this week that she is more than ready.  Bri needs nothing more than a YAY and a high five for her efforts to use the potty!  She uses it at least 3-4 times a day and is just so proud of herself.  She likes the independance (uses a little potty seat int he kitchen)  Very different from Ty.  Good luck, if it doesn't seem to be working, just wait a bit.  She is still young.

  • Thanks girls! Helpful tips! One more question for you. Did you guys use a potty or a potty seat? I've heard pros and cons for each and think it really depends on the child, but just wondering if your DD's preferred one over the other.

  • Bri prefers the independance of the little potty.  She tried to use the big potty by herself, but she is too little and it usually ends poorly.  This morning, she decided to use the big potty instead of her little potty, of course she didn't tell me.  She went in and tried to put the potty seat on herself and climb up, but she couldnt hold her poop for all that and ended up pooping some on the floor and got very upset with herself for pooping on the floor.  I had to remind her to ask me for help or use her little potty.  She used her little potty the next time.  Ty used the little potty for about a month, but he was older.  Once he got the hang of getting on and off the big potty by himself, he just used the regular toilet seat.
