Trying to Get Pregnant

Antibiotics and TTC

I went to the doctor yesterday for a check up because I hadn't been feeling well for quite some time but thought it was just a cold.  Turns out, I have had walking pneumonia or just a terrible lung infection for probably about a month or so without knowing it (how does that even happen?!) We were going to start TTC in this next cycle but the doc prescribed me a Z-Pack, pretty strong stuff.  This will wipe out your CM which makes it next to impossible to conceive- sperm cannot live/travel without CM.  All the doc told me was the we'll just have to push our TTC time back because it'd be worse to get pregnant with pneumonia than an antibiotic in my system.

Does anyone know how long the antibiotic will have that "drying out" effect on my body and if there's anything I can do to boost my CM? Or has anyone conceived while taking antibiotics (isn't that also questionable for baby's health, too?).  I'm kind of in the dark on this one. Any comments appreciated!

Re: Antibiotics and TTC

  • I'm not sure about the effect antibiotics have on a fertilized egg. BUT, couldn't you always use Pre-Seed to facilitate sperm movement?

  • FWIW- Azithromycin is a class B in pregnancy (safest).  I've never heard of an antibiotic causing "drying out"- that's usually due to a decongestant or other meds they put you on in addition to the antibiotic.

    hope that's somewhat helpful

This is what I thought, too, but the doc (who is my family doc not obgyn) said that it would "dry up" my CM so we should just push it back another cycle...I guess that isn't a big deal, but I was just wondering if anyone else had experience with this.  Thanks for the response!

  • Just FYI I had walking pnemonia and was prescribed the Z pack. It took me about 3 weeks to get to feeling better although still had chest pains for over a month. I would work on getting yourself better first even if it means holding off.

You are a complete idiot if you continue to try this month. Your doctor isn't worried about you drying up- the concern is with having pneumonia while pregnant. Exercise a little common sense.

We aren't TTC just yet... I was asking how long the antibiotic would have an effect on my body.
