Babies: 3 - 6 Months

I threatened my daughter with formula.

Namely, the Enfamil ready-to-eat stuff that I grabbed from the hospital that is brown and gross-looking, that I plan to start mixing in with her breast milk in the next few weeks to transition her over to formula.

She started screaming the instant I turned the pump on. I got up about halfway thru to comfort her, but she stopped crying and broke into a huge smile as soon as I did. And proceeded to start wailing again when I went back to the pump. I'm so sick of this. She's done this since she was born, but has since added the smile when I turn the pump off and go to her.

So when I was done, I picked her up and showed her the bottle I pumped. Then I showed her the clear jar of the brown Enfamil ready-to-eat formula and threatened that if she didn't stop crying when I pumped, she would get the gross-looking brown stuff. She gave me big shocked eyes. It was kinda funny. Hopefully she'll think twice about making it stressful to pump next time.

STM due Feb. 2017!

    Agreed.

And I'm kind of surprised to find this thread flame-free..

  • It's always nice when someone refers to formula as gross.

]Just so you know, RTF is darker and smells different than powdered formula, as well as being way more expensive. You may not want to use that regularly, it's not really that much easier.

I know...I was almost stunned...thats why my post was just "Whitney likes it!"  This post makes me feel like a shtastic mother for giving her "Brown" formula.  If I could have talked my boobs into producing more milk, I sure as hell would have.  Some of us just can't do it...and thank God they have Enfamil, so Whitney can get the nutrients she needs.

or better yet-choose the brown stuff. That makes me worse. Go me! Whatever. My son has done awesome with his gross formula, despite how people like to discuss it as substandard.

  • Ya... Ive been biting my tounge on this one for the past hour, but its stuck in my head, and I cant shake it...

So, here's the deal.... I had a horrible labor and emergency stat c-section delivery. Afterwards, I suffered from Edema (Gained 30+ lbs of water weight.. I could barely walk).. My body went into shock, and I was unable to breastfeed. I can not even explain the amount of tears I shed, and the amount of guilt I felt that my body was not able to provide nourishment for my son. Talk about feeling like a failure.

So, I did what I had to do.... and I fed my son the "Nasty brown formula". Its not poison. My son is just as healthy as the next.

Please remember how fortunate you are. You are able to provide for your child, in ways that I couldnt. Feeding my son formula does not make me any less of a mother.

  • Sad ohh boy. "...that I plan to start mixing in with her breast milk in the next few weeks to transition her over to formula."

I wasn't sh!tting on formula. I'm transitioning her over in the next few weeks, as soon as we get the okay from the surgeon to start changing up her diet. My daughter is the one who just had the imperforate anus repair surgery and we needed to avoid any possibility of constipation issues leading up to her surgery and thru her recovery.. or else I probably would have transitioned or supplemented sooner because I'm so sick of EPing... especially since she literally does cry every.single.time. I go to pump.

I was just surprised to see the ready-to-eat stuff be brown, and it does look gross in comparison to the usual white milk (I've only seen formula be white too). It was a surprise on the color thing, not a declaration of FORMULA as "gross". Confused Sheesh.

ETA: It's actually super ironic that I'm the one being called out for being one of "those" breastmilk mommies. I don't jump in on those posts very often but when I do, it's always to defend one's choice or need. Hell, I'm the one being sh!t on in real life for NOT using formula... my mom breathed a freakin sigh of relief when I said I was going to start transitioning over to it after DD's surgery. I was lectured prior to giving birth not to breastfeed for "too long", when "too long" meant more than three months. I had a post venting about that a little while back. I hate when my choices (and in my case, a need for my daughter) are sh!t on, so I'm the last one to do that to anyone else.

So fine...I threatened her with cutting her off from the milk she likes.

A jokey post taken way out of context and way too seriously.

I am well aware of what color it is and how it smells, thanks. I have used it before.  I have yet to smell anything pleasant when a baby spits up anything. That is not the point. The point is the tone of her post is rude.

No need to be so defensive. It was just a comment so you can back down now.

I used it in the beginning and the reason I stopped is because it is so much worse then powder hence my comment about it being gross.

I could really give two shiits about BM v. F. I just wanted to say that I'm sorry about your daughter's surgery. That must have been really hard on all of you. I hope she's feeling better!

I'm hoping that DD does too! I got a few jars from the hospital shortly before discharge over the weekend to start mixing it in as soon as we get the okay.

My biggest worry about starting the transition is that I hear/read that a lot of babies don't like the switch because they're so used to what they started with.

Me neither, that's why I'm sitting here reading the thread with this Tongue Tied expression on my face!

And thank you so much! She's doing a lot better.... she made it a lot easier on us because she's already back to her smiling happy self. Smile

DD had no problem being transitioned from EP to FF.We did it gradually over a couple weeks and it was fine. Good luck.

I made the same face because I could tell it was a joke. Whateva!

I'm glad she's doing better. My heart just goes out to parents who have to deal with medical issues with their little babies. It breaks my heart. I always hurt when JJ hurts and I become an emotional mess. I don't think I could have handled him in a surgery.

  • FWIW, I don't think you were saying anything offensive purposefully. I don't think you're one of 'those moms' . just think the OP was poorly worded. My other responses were more off on a larger tangent on how formula is discussed in general. I hope your transition to formula goes smoothly.

to allysun-I wasn't trying to sound defensive. I would've understood your comment if you had explained that in your first one. We did the same thing in switching. We used RTF at first, and the powdered definitely is better.

We did the same thing. That also helped avoid engorgement as well too.

And FWIW we put DS on Nutramigen then Alimentum which is uber nasty and he still drank it.

(Also, I didn't take your post that way. I figured you were weren't shiiting on FFing since you state you were going to transition.)

I'm sorry if it was, I certainly didn't mean it that way as I think has been established. Smile I don't get into these things (at least on purpose!), because I've had my milk be called "gross" more than once. The way that formula seems to be discussed in general is the same exact way my pumping has been discussed in my family. I think my parents do just tell relatives that it's formula, because I've gotten formula coupons and samples in the mail from relatives! I even had a formula coupon in a birthday card. It's very hurtful.

  • Seriously get over it. She wasn't being rude at all. I tried to bf and failed and cried and cried about it. My son is FF and I see no problem with this post what so ever. I actually thought it was cute and funny. OP I hope your daughter is doing better!
