2nd Trimester

Anyone else have an anterior placenta...

...which could lead to placenta previa? That is my condition right now and I just wanted to see if anyone else is in the same boat!

Re: Anyone else have an anterior placenta...

  • I have it. According to my OB and CNMs having anterior placenta does not put you at any higher risk for previa than having posterior placenta. It does, however, increasse slightly your chances of delivering the baby "sunny side up" (face up) which is a little bit harder. (This is because they typically orient facing the placenta.)

  • I have an anterior placenta... and slight placenta previa.

I've never heard of the anterior placenta possibly causing a baby to be born sunny-side up.  Doesn't mean it doesn't happen - just saying that I hadn't heard of it.  With all of my previous pregnancies (6), the placentas were all posterior.  Three of the six were back labor.  Of those three back labors, 2 were born facing up and 1 was born facing towards my thigh.

  • My placenta is entirely covering my cervix right now. If it stays like that, I won't have a sunny-side up or right-side up. I will have a scheduled C-section. I guess I am confused by some of these comments...

  • Placenta previa is when the placenta covers the cervix, it is different than anterior placenta where the placenta is in the front of the uterus.  I do not think anterior placenta "leads" to placenta previa.  Generally placenta previa will correct itself as the uterus grows and you will have an anterior or posterior placenta.  If it stays previa you may need a c/s.

I have read about the slight correlation between anterior placenta and a sunny side up baby, although this can usually be corrected during the birthing process by the doctor rotating the baby right before birth.....or so I've been told.

I have an anterior placenta and have had no complications so far, nor have I been given any warnings that it will cause any problems by my doctor.

  • I was told I have an anterior placenta. My MW didn't even bat an eye. All she said about it was that I won't be able to feel much movement right now. I try not to worry about what "could" happen as so much can change in such a short time.

  • I have an anterior placenta as well. My ultrasound tech didn't bat an eye...She didn't say anything about developing placenta previa or about the baby being sunny-side up. She just explained that placentas could be three ways and my way was normal. However, thanks to this post I'll mention my condition to my doctor and see what she says.

  • My understanding is that placentas generally move up, not down, so I have never heard of anyone developing previa (usually the opposite in that it tends to correct itself like half the time).

I have an AP and the only thing my doctor said was that it'd take longer to feel kicks, which it did.

  • I must have been mistaken then about saying I have just an anterior placenta. I do have placenta previa. At first, the ultrasound tech told me that she knew I had an anterior placenta, and then she did a vaginal check with a camera because she had to tell the doctor if any of the placenta was covering the cervix and it is 100% covering the cervix.
