Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Did your tot slow down on talking when they started walking?

Does that make sense?  Ruby just finally started walking full time at 18 months (yay!)  But now it seems like since she started walking, she's using her words less.  Is this common?

She only has about 8-10 words anyway, but it seems like she's not using those words as much as she did before she started walking.  Tongue Tied

  • Yes. The same thing happened when my son started walking. The pediatrician explained to us this was perfectly normal.

Thank you.....I wonder if it's still "normal" at 18 months though ?

DS has been walking since 11 months (12 months walking fairly well), but other than mama (which he has only said a few times, mainly to my picture when i'm not around) he hasnt talked

  • My DS is in EI and his therapists have explained to us that it is normal as well. According to them, they focus so hard on learning the one skill, they ignore everything else. DS just started walking maybe a month or 2 ago, but he wasn't talking either. Now, we cannot get him to quiet down Stick out tongue Babbling, talking, singing...you name it, he loves it.

I would think it would be bc it is not about the age, but about the developmental milestone.  My son wasn't talking a lot when he started walking, but we noticed that he stopped using and acquiring baby signs until a few weeks afterward.

Thanks that makes sense.  She had her 18 month checkup tomorrow so I'll run it by her ped too.

  • Our LO walked earlier - 11.5 months and didn't really take off on the talking until the last month or so.

  • Absolutely! It took DS several months to regain an interest in talking / making noise. He walked right when he turned 11 months and didn't get interested in talking until very recently.
  • Thanks everyone.  That makes me feel a little better Smile
