Trying to Get Pregnant

Should I worry?

Hi ladies, I really need to hang out here more often, I just read a few posts and you might as well be speaking a foreign language with all the terminology!

Anyhow, DH and I have been TTC for 6 months now with no luck.  I am pretty regular with a 28 day cycle.  The thing is AF lasts about 1 - 2 days for me and is so lite it is barely there. I never thought this was an issue (more that I was really lucky) until I started to read What To Expect Before You Are Expecting in which it said lite periods could be a sign of problems.

Anyhow I bought a pack of ovulation testers (POAS type) and tested for the past 7 days, from day 10 - 17 of my cycle and it seems that I did not ovulate.  Also my temp has not changed.

I know it can take a healthy couple a year or more to conceive but in light of all of the above is it time to visit my doc or should I relax?

BTW - I have visited my doc in regard to lite periods and check up and was told all was normal, However, I have not had any hormonal tests.  So I guess my Q is should I now request these?

Re: Should I worry?

  • My sister in law and I were actually just googling this last night.  This might be something you may want to talk to your doctor more in depth about.  There is a condition called anovulation (google it) from what we read very light periods were a symptom of it.  Basically its when you don't ovulate regularly or at all.  Now I could be wrong on this, soo like I said you should look it up your self, but it sounded like it was something that could be easily corrected with medication.  Nothing to worry to much about but you might bring it up to your doctor.  Good luck.

Thank you for replying.  That is what the book was referring to.  I will research it  and call my doctor (but not tell him I googled anything!).

  • FWIW, I also had extremely light periods (2 days at most) for most of my life; and I also didn't get a period every month.  My cycle was extremely erratic.  As a teenager I always joked that I'd never be able to get pregnant because my periods were so wonky (wow, was I funny :/ ).

Anyway, I ended up not having any trouble getting PG with my DD.  I did chart at the time but not religiously and not as a TTGP tool.

If you have concerns I recommend making a doc appointment to specifically and thoroughly discuss them.  Its great that you are charting - show this information to your doctor.

    Don't prematurely stress yourself out.

  • After stopping BCP I had very light periods, too.  I wouldn't jump to conclusions about it being symptomatic of a problem.

You said you aren't seeing a temp shift.  Could we see your chart?  Also, how often are you taking OPKs?

That's just it, I really don't want to be jumping to conclusions.  I have never had any symptomatic problems, I am healthy and a healthy weight.   I have had a full physical check up and was told all is good.

Honestly I know it can take time to get pg and I think I would not be stressing if I was not taking my temp and doing OPK's.

I have just signed up for fertilityfriend.  I have been writing down my temps on a note pad.  Also this is the first month of OPKs and I did them from cycle day 10 - 17.

Maybe I will relax this month and start to fill in my chart on FF and show you guys next month.  You may see something that I am not seeing.

  • Everyone's body is different you may just Ovulate late.  Not everyone ovulates at the text book CD 14.  I O anywhere from CD 17-CD 20 and actually this month it's CD 29 and still no sign of O.

As for your OPK's I suggest taking them 2 times a day....some surges only last 12 hours.

  • I agree with pp's that you may want to talk more with your doc about this and get a hormonal panel.

Also, the statistic that it takes a couple of normal fertility up to a year to conceive is based on *random* acts of intercourse. If you are charting and targeting your fertile phases, then you should in theory conceive more quickly. If your temp pattern isn't biphasic, you don't appear to be ovulating, and you are (trying) to have fertility-focused intercourse and not conceiving, then yes keep the conversation going with your doctor!!! Sometimes us patients have to be persistent in getting their attention. :)
