Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

when did you introduce peanut butter?

a friend of mine told me not to give DD peanut butter untill after 2 yrs old. I havent asked my pedi yet but are any of you giving your kids peanut butter now?

I LIVE on the stuff and DD is always trying to get a bite. What are all of you doing?

  • Around 9 or 10 months. We have no known food allergies in our family.

  • My pedi just gave the all clear to start introducing it at her 15 mo appt on Monday.  DD has no other food allergies up to this point.  The only thing we have to hold off on now (until after age 2 1/2 he said) is shell fish.  We have shell fish food allergies on both sides.

My pedi as well as my aunt (who is a child nutritionist) both recommended waiting until after 1 year old (we have no food allergies in our family).  We gave DS peanut butter just before he turned 13 months old.  Loves it!

    Us too!

  • We waited until the standard recommendation of 1 year.  We did some reading on the Amer. Pedi. Assoc. site and asked our doctor, and they pretty much say that you should wait until 2 or 3 only if there's a family history of food/nut allergies.

  • Personally, we haven't and we won't. DD (and DS) will get their first exposure (hopefully) to peanuts in the doctor's office while allergy testing.

DH is severely / deathly allergic to peanuts so we don't have them in the house.

Plus, she's not going to actually be EATING peanuts/peanut butter (since DH is so allergic), it'll just be nice to know if/how allergic DD and DS are for when they're around other kids.

  • I'm SO glad to hear all of your feedback! I thought we would have to wait another year but we dont have any peanut allergies in our family & she's been good with every food we've introduced to her so far.

Looks like PB & J is in our near future after all. woohoo Thanks girls!

  • At a year when the pedi gave us the ok. There's really no need to hold off unless you have readon to believe there's an allergy.

  • Our pedi has a 2 year rule.  We stuck to that for DS1 and so far DS2 has not had  peanut butter.  There are no food allergies in the family and we haven't found anything DS1 is allergic to so I'm not sure if we'll continue to hold out.  I am one of those weird people who, in this case at least, is reluctant to go against the pedi b/c what IF he had some terrible reaction?  Our pedi would be like "why didn't you listen to me?"  Granted he can still have a bad reaction at two, but I understand allergic reactions are usually handled better the older the child is, no?

  • We started around 12 months with peanut butter, but I later realized I had given her Oatnut bread starting around 11 months.

We have no allergies to anything in either of our families.

  • I did a few days after he turned a year old. My mom has a mild allergy so I was nervous but he did fine with it.

  • I thought the rule was 1 year so I gave my DD a tiny tiny piece of peanut butter (just tore off a piece of my bagel from the bottom and the top had a tiny amount of pb on it) last week & she had a pretty bad reaction. We had her tested yesterday & she is definitely allergic & now has to carry an epi pen.
  • we haven't yet and LO is 14 months. Think we might try after her 15 month appointment.  Any recommendations on brands of peanut butter your babies have liked?  and I heard you should put on very thinly to help with any choking issues.

  • A couple weeks ago I gave her a crust of my peanut butter toast with a tiny bit on it because she was begging. Then last week we were at the new house painting and she went through all her food and was still hungry so we gave her peanut butter crackers. My pedi is still old school when it comes to allergies - we gave eggs at 8 months and then at a year they were like "Oh, she can have eggs now" so we'll probably hear we can give her peanut butter at the 2 year :P

  • DH did without me knowing at 10 months.  She has been eating it ever since.  Pedi gave the ok at 1 yr, but talked about the new research saying it's ok earlier than that with no family history of nut allergies.

DD isn't big on it, she still prefers cream cheese or hummus on her toast, but I buy Teddie Old Fashioned unsalted and my husband eats it lol. I prefer almond butter myself, but it's too pricey.

  • Just shy of his 1st birthday. It was a bite of my PB&J at Panera and he loved it. Still does, though now he prefers it alone or paired with bananas.

  • Within a week or so of her turning 1 year.  I cleared it with the pedi first, who also recommended I keep a bottle of Children's Benadryl on hand in case of emergencies when introducing new foods.  We don't have a history of peanut allergy though, so it's strictly a precaution to keep the meds on hand.

  • Our pedi suggested 2 years.  I know many kids who have a severe nut allergy so I don't want to chance it until she can communicate to me if she feels weird.  I'm waiting until close to 2 years.  For now, she just gets jelly sandwiches with wheat germ.

  • I'd say we started giving our son peanut butter around 13 months?

he seems to enjoy it.. in small amounts though of course

  • I just started introducing it. I put a small amount on her lips a few days ago and let her eat a small amount today. She seemed to like it so far. My pedi said they recommend waiting until 2 because of the risk of choking, but she was okay with me giving it to her as long as I spread it thin.

  • I don't remember for DS1 but 15mos for DS2 and he had a bad allergic reaction. DS1 is not allergic.
  • Our pedi okayed it at her 9mo appointment, and even though we don't have any allergies running in our family I still waited until she was about 11mos. She likes it, especially if she sees me eating it, but it wouldn't be her preference. She prefers hummus over pb.
