12 hr shifts and pumping?

I go back to work in 2 weeks and work 12 hr shifts. How often do you pump in your 12 hr shift? I'm a nurse in a busy ER and wonder how often I'll actually be able to get away. I was thinking every 3-4 hrs? But she eats every 2 hrs when awake.

Re: 12 hr shifts and pumping?

  • I am an OB/GYN and just went back to work this week. I have tried to pump q 3 hrs and it has worked out ok, but I have been lucky so far with my schedule. Once I get busier, it will be another story... good luck!

  • I aim for 4 times a shift, although the doctor wants us to try giving him 5 oz a bottle so I may have to pump 5 times cuz i dont pump that much in 1 session :( so annoying
  • I work 10 hour shifts.  I pumped three times at work, so about every 3-4 hours.  The first week of work I was about ready to explode when I got home though.  Keep extra nursing pads and maybe even an extra top at work in case you can't pump when you need to.
  • I got to work early and pumped right before my shift. I also work in the medical field (RT). I talked to my manager about having a set time and place so that I would pump every 3-4 hours, it was difficult but it usually worked out.
