Did anyone's LO outgrow a peanut allergy?

I gave N a bit (very small amount) of peanut butter when he was 1 1/2 and about an hour later he had some red blotches on his face.  So, I never gave him peanut butter since.  But, over the weekend we were at a restaurant and they had some peanuts on the table for us to munch on.  N wanted to try one.  I thought since he's over 2 now I'll let him try just one.  So, he ate one peanut.  That night he broke out in hives all over his body.  So, now I know he?s totally allergic to peanuts.  Either DH or I are allergic to it and I actually love peanut butter.  Is this something he will outgrow?  How do i know if he outgrows it - do I periodically let him try it?

  • you really ought to see an allergist.

my dd was confirmed allergic at 2 yrs old.  they will retest her at 4 or 5 yrs.

  • Yes...see an allergist.  Many allergies result in increased reactions with every exposure, and you may be unwittingly a taste from a very serious reaction.  My DD#1 is allergic to peanuts and almonds.  DS almonds, cashews and dairy.  DD#2 will be tested next week.  I think it is wise to have him teted so that when he goes  to school he has an epi-pen if needed; otherwise legally they can do NOTHING for a child in the midst of a serious reaction but wait for 911.

  • I'm lurking, but wanted to respond. My LO is 14 months old and was diagnosed last week with allergies to milk, eggs, peanuts, and other nuts.  He had a reaction somewhat like yours and our pediatrician referred us to the allergist. While there, they did the skin prick test on his back and determined which products caused an allergic reaction.  Peanut was the most severe for us.

We have benedryl and an epi pen pack on hand. We had to train day care and anyone else who might be alone with him how to use it. I don't want to be scary, but it can be a serious situation for someone with allergies. I'd definitely contact your pediatrician and see about getting an appointment with an allergist.  GL
